Thanks G for your continued "posting" of your media research.

Definitely has eliminated the need for "guess" work on our end...

No problem, glad to help out. I'm getting to the point where I think that I've tested almost everything (8x that is). I have tried a variety of 1x, 2.4x, and 4x media; however, have too lazy to post the results.

Yes thanks Gary.
I gave up guessing and just bought the recommened Verbatim (MCC) media. I know it's more expensive but considering the cost of the info it carries a few extra dollars is not important.

NEC 6500A "whine"

The "drawer" appears to be less rigid that that of the Toshiba (4x+- Drive - 6372 I think) that I am replacing. The drive makes less noise and "rumbles" much less than the Toshiba. It does; however, "whine" a bit as it switches speed and such. The drive runs much cooler than the Toshiba, IMHO.
Hi Omaha,

The quote is from a very very old post of yours. My post might be in the wrong forum but here I am.
Last week i received my brand new Dell Inspiron 6000D fitted with NEC 6500A. And from the very start i could hear a sound, which I have never ever experienced with any optical media before. I was frantically searching the net and finally i stumbled upon this post where u mention "whine".

I hear a beep kind of a sound when the disc initializes and when i try to copy something from disc to my hard drive. And i was worried abt it. Is this the "whine" u mention

Thanks

Yep, it sure is. The drive is "calibrating" to the media that is to be processed. Nothing wrong and it is kind of good to hear that it's working during the "mount" process.

Bump for someone that recently purchased a new unit.
