ordering my 9860 tonight need final opinion! Thanks!

This is what Im going to order tonight:

3.6 GHZ
X800
2 GB 533 DDR2
2X 60 GB 7200 in raid 0
8X DVD +-
TV Tuner
XP Pro
Targus 315

and thats pretty much it, I just want to know what you guys and gals think of my configuration, and I was wondering if it would be wise to invest in a more comprehensive warranty? and what about repair transit coverage and export converage?

also, I have an external 160 GB 7200 HD so I dont need a ton of space on my laptop, so I want the fastest drives which is why I chose the 2 60 GB 7200 drives, so is RAID 0 a good choice for that?

Thanks for your help!
Steve

Looks pretty close to what I plan on ordering.

As noted in our reveiw the 80gb 5400RPM(SATA) drives pull ahead a little when configured in RAID 0. Other than that good choice.

Luke, do these 2 drives have the same amount of cache? The reason I ask is because desktop drives dont max out ATA-133. Is there some other reason besides the interface that make the SATA drives you use better than the 7200 rpm ones?

thats interesting, since space is not a concern and since ill mostly be playing games and working on homework which will include, PS, maya, 3dsmax etc, would the 7200RPM drives be more beneficial?

2x60 5400 SATA drives in Raid0 is faster than what u have. 7200 is only good if you are going to have them standalone and not in Raid0. Im sure the 5400 drivers are also quiter.

One thing that has me tripped up on my order is the processor speed. You are paying $228 for 600MHz ($.38 per MHz)if you come for the 3.0, but if you get the 3.4 you are paying $145 for 200MHz ($.72 per MHz). That too me is too much. If you leave it at 3.4GHz you are paying $86.95 for 400MHz ($.21 per MHz)

That is why I went for the 3.4, it was the most cost effective price. $145 will buy:
3 games
laptop backpack
flashdisk and lock and DVD-R media
pay my cellphone bill
maybe buy some ram
definetly helps on the cost of upgrading the processor when there is a better bang for your buck available.

Do I have the excact technical reason why no. The cache on the 2 drives should be the same. I can't tell you why it performed better... just simply that the bench mark scores were higher.

i think ill just get a single 60 GB 7200 drive, i dont really need more than that... and whats the status on the 9860? If I order one today when can I expect it to show up?

Nice...

Im planning on ordering mine on Friday. Here is my config:

3.6 GHZ
X800
2 GB 533 DDR2
2X 80 GB 5400 in raid 0
8X DVD-DL +-
TV Tuner
No OS
802.11G +Bluetooth

Im getting the Audigy Card and the Targus Backpack through work.(I get a kick @$$ discount.)

I'm pondering:

3.4GHZ
X800 (maybe...wanna see benchmarks/reviews/comparisons)
1GB 533 DDR2
2X 60 GB 7200 in raid 0
8X DVD-DL +-
TV Tuner
XP PRO
802.11G +Bluetooth

The one thing that I'm shopping for is a good warranty. I'm a huge believer in them. Who has the best bang for the buck? PCTORQUE seems to offer a good one. Any suggestions?

Not for a while. I ordered mine from PCTorque on December 25th and it still hasn't even shipped from Sager to PCTorque. Luke said Sager expected some 9860s this week, but no one's answered my thread about whether Sager got them or not so I don't know if they even have some to fulfill current orders. Someone else on this forum ordered on December 25th too (but from www.discountlaptops.com) and he got his on January 3rd.

This also puzzles me, is it maybe because the ATA-133's share a cable/controller and so only get half the badwidth each? I'd love to see some other benchmarks - my gut would have been the 7200 every time.

Yeah that is what I suspected too after I made my post. I suspect that the mobo only has 2 IDE controllers, and with provisions for 2 optical drives as well, that would mean that the IDE HDs would have to share the controllers. The next question would be what do they share the IDE controllers with? Both HDs on one controller, or 1 HD per controller with the opticals as slave? And the SATA drives get their own separate controller? I dunno.

Not too soon. There is a sizeable backorder to be filled first. I for one ordered mine 10 days ago.

That's the laughable part. I DIDN'T order a paintjob and I DIDN'T order anything special. Just a 9860 and it's taking this long. But at least I get a free upgrade to the X800.

That's according to PCTorque anyway... I don't know how much I want to trust since I was first told that a couple of weeks ago, Sager received 9860 shipments and would be able to fill ALL pending orders (my order was about a week old at that time). Then they tell me I didn't make the cut-off. Then I was told they'd get some this week. And now the word is that they're not getting them this week. So anyway, I hope the wait is well worth it. That notebook better be damn perfect for the wait as it might cost me some points docked off for a couple of my classes for not having a mandatory laptop in class.

Its probably true..my replacement came right before christmas in a clevo box with a generic notebook badge.. I think they were at the end of stock to send that to me heh.. but hey the x800 will probably be worth it.. I almost wish could wait til next month for the new 6800..
