IBM X40 upgrades?

Thread Starter
I was wondering if I get an IBM X40 if I could upgrade the 40GB 4200rpm hard drive.

I called IBM, and they currently do not offer an X40 with more GB (it uses a hard drive smaller than your average laptop), so I'm stuck with 40GB in the laptop.

IBM does, however, have a "ThinkPad High Speed 40 GB Hard Disk" (5400rpm), but I don't know if it is compatible with the X40, and I must have spoken to 2-3 people at IBM before they said they could not help me without a product serial number.

In short, I was wondering if I could upgrade this X40 with this hard drive.

Thanks!

I'm not positive about this but I think the X40 uses 1.8inch hard drives (like ipod) as opposed to the more common 2.5inch notebook hard drives. Which is why there are limited options in storage capacity. And why that 5400rpm notebook drive would not fit into the X40. Someon correct me if I'm wrong.

insomniac99, since you own one, can't you open it see what's inside?
thing is, I also want to get one, but that will kinda keep me away... or maybe not

1.8 " Harddrives? I certainly hope not, don't they only spin at 3600 RPM?

Why would you want for him to open it up? It does indeed only use 4,200 rpm hdds. At the moment, 40GB is the max for that small a hdd.

No, you can't upgrade the HDD in X40 with that HDD, read here:

There is a 60 GB 4200 RPM 1.8" HDD available now in Sony T2xx series. You could probably order one from Sony parts direct if you want a bigger drive.

If you want to put a larger or faster hard drive in a similar notebook, get an IBM X31 before they are gone. Now discontinued, but extremely popular model. Slightly larger, slightly thicker, slightly heavier, but you can put a 100GB 5400 or a 60GB 7200 standard notebook drive in them.
Arguably a more solid notebook than the X40. The X31 also has firewire, which the X40 doesn't, also a Compact Flash slot reader, and a discrete video card (although VERY minimal specs) where the X40 has integrated video only.

16mb gpu on the X31 but very good battery life. About double that of the X40s standard battery. I think the X31 is definetely better than the X40.

Does anyone have any idea what will be different about the upcoming IBM ThinkPad X41? I read back when Sonoma was announced that the X41 would be released in April. I'm hoping it more customizable than the X40

I can't find out much info about the IBM X41 either (maybe someone else knows more), but it sounds like, apart from a fingerprint reader, it will be essentially the same as the X40, except with the Sonoma chipset...

Well I dont know if U can replace with that drive, but I do know that X40 has a 1.8' drive spinning in it and the one I have(cant say about other x40-models) but my X40s drive is spinning at 4.200RPM..

But there are 1.8'-drives for sale or coming up soon here in sweden and there are 1.8'-drives for sale at IBM for the X40 but if U want to check out these drives from hitatchi:

Hitatchi Travelstar C4K60

..and yeah, btw, I see that these only come in a 4.200RPM-versions..=(
So I cant help U there, but I _think_ that IBM has the the word "mini" in it's name the ones that can be installed into the actual x40...
