CoffeeShark, if it's an integrated solution, then I would believe it's directed to people who wants portability. But, as we can see, the battery life (~3 hours, and you know that those are theoretical numbers) doesn't tell us that. So, where/what is the market for this notebook? I don't believe I'm wrong by thinking that... right?
Asus is just extremely stupid.......

The W3N looks like a great machine. If you want portability and not gaming, then it has everything you could want.
Not sure if this has been mentioned but the final config for the W3N is up in the air.

It is available in Asia right now, but with the 855 chipset. Asus plans to release it in the US with the 915 chipset in March, but is still undecided as to whether to use dedicated or shared graphics for the US release.

With dedicated graphics expect it to be in the 2500-3000 range and there is a good change it will be sold like the W1N, that is, as a complete system w/ the global warranty.

EDIT: Also, to all of those bashing Asus' upcoming releases, many, besides the W3N, have not been finalized spec-wise for US release and are in test releases in Asia to see their marketability and viability before US release.

The Z71A is marketed as a lower-cost but modern solution for business and student. The graphics is low to keep the price down, while still allowing for upgrading later (cpu) and a long life.

It's not just Graphics vs Battery, there are a lot of other factors.

Hopefully there'll be a flood of x700 powered laptops when I plan to buy in a few months. From the looks of it though, the Acer 8100 will just be getting back in stock and other models will still be in the pre-release stage.

Ah well, the Acer is a mighty fine laptop from the sounds of things. Guess my expectations were too high for this launch.

I cant wait for the X700 lappys, of course I'd defintly go for the X600 lappys if they were near my weight requirements!

Let me try to explain better...

I really do understand your point, CoffeeShark, and I know (at least I hope ) that it's not only "performance vs. battery", just because this notebook is not marketed for any of those "segments". I didn't try to say that Asus is "stupid" or anything like that, just because one of the notebooks that I really admire is the M6. However, I think I was too fast on the previous post. I will try to explain better...

I went to rjtech and configured it with 1.7dothan/1gb-generic/60gb-5400/a-b-g-wlan for $1314 (I put a P-M taking a look at the price, instead of a P4, even if rjtech only allows P4 or Celerons at the page, what seems buggy. Sometimes it shows Z81, but the price is right and the same of the announced Z71, so this detail is not a problem).

$1314 for a fairly common configuration seems expensive to a business notebook like that. The lack of a medium (or even good) graphic card option takes out the occasional gamer buyer from the scene. Then, there are only businessmen and _typical_ students, people that prefers, generally, smaller notebooks (< 15", let alone 15.4"). And, in the last possibility, this notebook could have been a budget one (no predefined kind of person), so people with no options (money) would buy it regardless of its size/weight/performance/battery-time. But, once again, I don't think it's the case (see the configuration - and the price! - I mentioned above). Finally, the upgradeable CPU is not a huge advantage at all, in my opinion, because the typical buyers of it won't need this feature, since for what they do, a P3@1Ghz is the heaven...

Thanks a lot, Xchus, but that is even worse:

Z71 with 1.7dothan/2x512mb-generic/60gb-5400/a-b-g-wlan:

$1364

I agree with you for the most part - but the fact is that it is a new solution, at a decent price and weight. I think, as Sonoma's become more available, this will become the lower cost solution. Since it is brand new, it's naturally a higher price right now.
