8886 battery life

I've been reading everyone's messages religiously for the past few days and i've all but forgotten about the Alienware 51-m that i wanted to buy. It's going to be a Sager from all that i've read.

That said, I'm leaning more towards an 8886 over the 5660, but i'm still a little hazy about some battery facts.

1) WAS the 8886 actually able to be underclocked?

2) If so, did it extend the battery life at all?

3) Long enough to maybe say watch a DVD on a plane?

4) Lastly, if i get a spare 8886 battery is it easy enough to change out on a plane without the use of tools?

I'm sure the answers are in a forum somewhere, but my eyes are burning from my CRT so a little help would be appreciated.

I'm probably not going to be without ac that often, but for those few times i don't want to regret not getting the 5660!

thanks
Rob

1) no idea
3) depends on DVD, but you'd be cutting it close
2), 4) the 8886 battery drains more than the 5660 (same as 51-m, by the way) and an extra battery for the 8886 would probably only add on another 30 minutes. I don't know if it extended the battery life, but the 8886 is more for plug to plug, not for a long plane trip.

1) Yes I believe it can be in the bios
2) eh, I havent been able to test it really so, got me
3) I havent been able to but then again I pry have something setup wrong
4) the battery is held in with screws, yes , what I did was just remove the screws, the battery stays in rather well w/o them. PCTORQUE (i believe) recommended using valcro but there wasnt enough space in the battery slot to get it to work, I'll have to fittle with that also

When I get my 8886 on tuesday, I'll do some testing for ya. I should be able to do mutiple power cycles while at home, and when I go into work in Thursday, I'll see if I can get a full 2hr DVD out of it, using the underclock bios setting when on battery power...

thanks for everything...

Also, does anyone know of an external battery charger that works with the 8886 batteries?

Same old story !...... 8886 will gets too warm if used with charger not suitable .

I found this link where you can get a charger that is suitable

http://www.xantrex.com/applications/...sp?did=305&p=4

I asked on this forum a few weeks ago whether the statpower 300 was OK and Pctorque gave me good advice.

If possible try ringing Adam at PCtorque and maybe he has some suggestions for you. I opted for the Statpower 300 as I could get my hands on it and as I am in europe to import from the USA directly was to expensive with custom inport duties!!!

So far as a air plane adaptor - thereis'nt one yet.

I also contacted Nalance for an external batterv like the pwer pad that PCtorque sells but I was advised that the total time including internal battery as about 4-5 hours only . And I thought that that was not worth the extra cost USD 299

Yeah life's a bummer!!!! That the only reason I idd not buy from Pctorque. He really should open up a branch in Europe!!

I have the same problem that why I ordered my from Holland .Where the guarantee was 3 years and 16" UXGA!! And I could make up what confiquration I wanted.

www.laptops.nl

I ordered 8886

Pentium 4 3.06
1024 mb
120 gb
seperate kepad
16 " UXGA!!!!!!!!!!
CD/ RW
DVD
floppy drive
51
2 x Pc card slot
ISDn card
fax/lanwi-fi (ADSL)
infra red wireless
USB 2.00 x 4
Firewire
Windows XP home
all usual connections etc
Auto charger
Auto converter electric t110-220
5 kgs in weight ( the weight was free )!!!
The price was expensive but I configured something similar with Dell and it was the same price . Only Dell was without the Key pad & 16 in screen and all the other extras .

I am sutre you can ring them in Hollanf the time zone is the same!! And calls within EC are not so expwnsive ant more. You can even visit them in Holland and on the way pass Amsterdam and see the

RED LIGHT DiSTRICT !! or have some Space Cakes !!! Ha! Ha! Ha!

THe prices are more expensive in Europe. But does your supplier in France also include the 3 year guarantee? Best to do is send an e-mail or phone www.laptops.nl ( you need to speak to Robbert Hegger )

The only major problem I see buying from States is you have to import into the EC and if you have a problem ( ie repair etc ) then you have to re- export it and re- import it again . Our probem in the EC is high import duties. I have looked all over Europe to try and get the best deal usually all computers are cheaper in USA.

Remember the after sales is very important.

hey i thought it was said that the 8886 is already underclocked like at 50% of the processor speed when running on batteries anyways..
You ordered a 3.06 GHz Roy? Let me know how THAT goes.
Well, as said, the 16" UXGA isn't being sold yet, you'll be waiting for a long while on that one if I'm not mistaken... also, the 8886 does underclock on battery if you put it on max battery as the power scheme in windows xp, as I wrote in my review if you're following that. Also, I'm glad to see that valence finally admitted what I was thinking to be true about the battery time not increasing all that much with that powerpad. Finally, denkc, the 8886 cannot have a second battery, only a spare, which takes the place of the main battery once the main one dies. If you kill the screen brightness to minimum (which is still plenty bright) and use headphones, you can get a full 2 hour movie on dvd. Just don't have any peripherals hooked up to it. Best of luck to everyone!
