Centrino laptop with radeon 9700 pro 256mb ram

I found this site in a notebook magazine: http://www.cyberpowersystem.com/high...ntbks43200.asp
They have other systems with radeon 128mb, but this particular model has 9700 with 256mb. This is the first time i saw a centrino lappy with 256mb vram. Is it a misprint?

do a search on the uniwill 259ia, there's tons of reviews all over this place. and check the stickies!

256MB on a MR9700 is a waste. Powerful as it is, Even the MR9700 will have problem running any current game beyond 1280x1024 so the extra RAM will never be needed.
Agreed, the MR9700 isn't fast enough to run games at the detail settings that require 256MB of memory.
Agreed again, it seems like it is just for bragging rights.

You'll never know the next generation games could make use of it.

Just like the "pro" ending is for bragging rights, considering it's just an overclock Then again, who wouldn't accept an overclock done by the manufactor?

If there are games that can make use of it then great!

The extra 128MB RAM on my 9800 Pro w/256MB RAM in my desktop gave me little to no improvement in games because even if I could crank up the resolution or eye-candy, the frame rates dropped to the point that it wasn't worth it.

Like Wiz33 said, it's not powerful enough to utilize it.
That is correct, my experience with desktop PCs has showed me that more than 128mb of ram in any card with less than 12 pipelines is a waste...
But then again if you don't pay extra for it, you won't mind.

If there was a uniwill version with centrino + 128mb radeon 9700, that was considerably cheaper, then we would have a valid point...

No, that is the entire point. Any game with a mode that has high enough quality to need 256MB of memory will run so slow on the MR9700 that it won't be PLAYABLE with those settings, regardless of if you have 128MB or 256MB.

Try running Ultra quality DooM 3 on an MR9700. It won't matter if you have the 128MB or 256MB version, it will run like crap either way.

Depending on the resolution. Sure it will run like crap 1600x1200. But 800x600 it would run better with 256 MBs than 128. And don't give any bs that it cant run on Ultra in that resolution. My GeForce 5200 256 MB graphic card can Run Doom III at 35 FPS on High

At 800x600 it wouldn't really run much faster with 256MB than it does with 128MB, no. It's not the memory bottlenecking it. Even the Radeon 9700 with 64MB runs new games well at these low resolutions. I don't have a link to any test, but generally the differences are very small.

But on High quality the graphic card won't have to swap out textures with the Ram. Since on High quality Doom III uses 256 MBs of textures it would have to constantly swap out 128 MBs with the Ram if you were using a 128 MB graphic card.

If you have links to actual results, I'd be happy to see them.

I don't have links, it's common sense. I know from experience. I had a 128 MB FX 5200 and for X-mas my brother who knows nothing about computers got me a 256 MB FX 5200 it was funny I was like "Wow!!! a 256 MB 5200.... Great!." The point being I saw an improvement in FPS, it gained 9 FPS in 800x600 High Quality. Which is a big improvement considering I got about 22 FPS with the 128 MB 5200.

Dunno, I'd still like to see someone test it in detail.

I could have sworn Ultra quality required 256MB, and High quality only required 128MB. But I could be mistaken.
