Comparison Pricing

I have been doing some price comparisons on small notebooks to get a good idea of the $$$:

1) Alienware Sentia: 2Ghz Pentium M, 2 GB RAM, 60 GB 7200 RPM HDD, DVD & CD Writer, 3 Yr Max Service and Warranty, black coffee mug, extra AC adapter, bluetooth USB module, shoulder carrying case, black AW T Shirt.

Cost: $ 2896

2) Dell Inspiron M700: 2Ghz Pentium M, 2 GB RAM, 60 GB 5400 RPM HDD, DVD & CD Writer, 4 Yr Max Service and Warranty, extra AC adapter

Cost: $3233 (I used every discount I could find)

3) Uniwill 223II: 2Ghz Pentium M, 2 GB RAM, 60 GB 5400 RPM HDD, DVD & CD Writer

Cost: $2354

This surprised me, as Dell is coming out the most expensive and I can't select the high performance HDD with it. Also, the AW price is really competititve especially since I added stuff to it that the others did not have (shirt, coffee mug, carrying case, usb bluetooth). In fact, if I pull of the extras and the warracnty to make the Sentia match the Uniwill, the price on the Sentia is $2412.

Interesting....

As someone told me on this forum when pricing a Dell don't get the RAM from Dell as it is really over priced. Go to a site like http://www.newegg.com/ and get the RAM there then you'll see a huge price drop...

True, I could go RAM shopping but my thought is that this swhould be one stop shopping when I make a big ticket purchase like a PC.

Looking at newegg, one can get 1GB so-dimms for about $260 each if you want to gamble with Corsair RAM, about which I have heard (and experienced at work) horror stories. If you go with a brand with a better reputation, like Kingston, it costs about $400 per so-dimm. Either way you are correct, Dell is raping their customers on RAM, and I noted also on optical drives.

AW, on the other hand, allows you to go to 2 GB for only $425 over list. And the optical drive upgrades are also very economical. The vendor I used to price the uniwill was competitive with AW but offered no warranty.

BTW, I also priced a Falcon NW FragBook thin and light. I would have posted the config and price but I could not stop laughing at the $$$$$...

Hey Craig, can you give us hints about the Alviso in a future Alienware lappy? Alviso is coming soon and I am hearing rumors from all the other lappy companies... but AW has remained mysteriously silent... Is there going to be something that could surprise with an Alviso chipset and possibly an actual graphic card

5,400 isn't bad. It is a huge improvement from the 4,200 drives.

I'll double check on whether it was Corsair but I'm pretty sure it was (of course we used crap IBM laptops, so that could be an issue too)....
