Case mod

Does anyone have any leads as to exactly how alienware mod's the 5660. I fell in love w/ the look but there's no way I'm going to pay an extra $725 or so for a pretty paint job. I would love to find either a company willing to paint it for me or specific instructions on how to paint it myself. I want to acheive the metallic "cyborg green" look and i figure that regular spraypaint just won't cut it. I think i have to sand off the top 100th of a layer and lay down, 1 layer of primer, 2 layers of spraypaint for depth, then hit it with too layers of some type of "clearcoat" for the glossy look.

You just echoed my thought.
I just got my Sager and will repaint it if someone shows me how.

Here's some interesting customizations that may help you out.

Yeah, I have been thinking along these lines. I'm going to research it thoroughly though, the last thing I'd want is to make the laptop looks worse.

If I do end up painting the chassis, I'll post pics

I've already posted this on other thread but here you go:

It's for desktop case though, if you follow the steps right, you will get mirror/shiny finish. If 5660's outer layer is plastic (which I think it is), use Vinyl Dye (Plasti-Kote brand is good, hard to find IMO). You can find them at your local automotive shop or paint stores.

I highly recommend using vinyl dye since all you need to do is brief surface cleaning, 1st coat then 2nd coat (optional). They stick to plastic and dries quickly. (regular spray paint will peel off with heat, everyday use etc.) Also you don't need to mess with primer, sanding, washing, repeat three times... ugh, although it will give nice shiny mirror finish in the end, but if you did crappy job on sanding and priming, you will get uneven result which will look uber craptastic + ugly paint job.

So basically its your choice, if you think you can do it with regular paint go for it, good luck. If you think your gonna screw it up, use vinyl dye.

I'm not entirely sure I'm correct about this, but it's something for you guys to think about. The case used in the above link (pc workshop link) was metal with paint over it. This would not be the same at metal with plastic over it. I don't think I would go about sanding the plastic exterior of my case, wet or otherwise, unless I knew for damn sure it wouldn't FUBAR the plastic/case.

Just my 2 cents.

thx for the responses guys

After some research the steps I can figure for the mod are
1.Gut the case- remove all components, mobo, drives, I'm working on how to remove the lcd.
2. Clean the case- soap and water bro'
3.Tape off the parts I don't want to paint- use electrical paint because vinyl dye leaks through other lesser tapes.
4.Hit it- spray in light even layers more coats is much better than thicker coats.
DON'T Spray metal parts w/ vinyl dye.
