a few question about my i8600 - Page 2

Does the laptop have fan/temp sensors? I know once I get mine I'll be nosey as heck and want to know everything about it; temperature is one of the main concerns.

Hello
I recived my new 8600c about two weeks ago, the fan vents are at the back only on my unit. It has worked perfectly so I don't think overheating is a problem.

Edit:
Vents also at the top but not underneath or at the side. Forgot to mention the one on top, sorry

You know... just had a thought that maybe the new fan units are in fact going to be used on the i6000 -- so Dell is "testing the waters" with them on the current line to see how they work out.

Yes it does; you can download FanGUI to manually control the fans (or set the temperature ranges at which you'd like them to turn on) for that very purpose.

My original 8600 has vents on the back, the top, the side and the bottom.

The newer 600m's have a little different fan intake and vent design I believe for a similar reason. The bottom fan intake has a fine mesh over it (removable I believe) so that small objects cannot get in it. Also the back vent has smaller openings much like the one on the 8600 pic.

My NEC ND-6500a beeps

This beeping only happens when it initiall reads the CD - ie when you first put it in, and after you let it rest and re-access the CD.
I have the NEC ND-6500a and the same beeping, distinct from the high-pitched sound that it makes when starting. The beeps also only happen when a new disc is inserted, sometimes two beeps, usually three. They are distinct electronic beeps that happen every time a disc is inserted. Dell diagnostics says that the drive is fine and I have had no problems in reading/writing several DVDs/CDs. Am trying to decide if I should have it exchanged by Dell.

So no one else has had the beeps with the ND-6500a?

hi,
hmm, seems like i'm not the only one without fan vents on the bottom of the laptop. Though I'll probably d/l a temp/fan monitor and post some temps here just to see if they're normal.

and skifiend with the beeping noise, i read on another forum that a DVD drive (not NEC one) did the similar beeping routine and died a few weeks after...though that was the only thread i could find.

I got my NEC ND6500a changed to a SONY D56a and I must admit the SONY does also beep BUT its not as loud/distinct and it's slightly different, sounds more 'normal' (hopefully that makes sense). And not sure, but all I can say is when the drives are reading CDs my SONY drive was much quieter in general.

Yeah, I read that too and called Customer Service today to ask for a replacement.

WRT the fan vents, I had to request a replacement CPU heatsink and they sent me a new fan as well. That one had the bottom vents, just like my original one.

Good to hear that the Sony is working out for you.

That shrieking sound is perfectly normal. It happens on both of my models and only initially when an optical disc is inserted.

I would stick with the 6500a as opposed to SONY's because the 6500a is a prevalent drive and there are third-party firmware updates for it.

I am aware that the shrieking is normal and that's why I called the sound "beeps." As I said earlier, they are definite electronic beeps that are distinct, i.e., separate, from the ramping up whirr. I haven't noticed the beeping in other drives and I've owned DVD burners since the Sony DRU-500a came out.

Thanks for the suggestion on the 6500a over the Sony.

Funny thing. I wanted to see if I can hear those beeps you're talking about and my 6500a won't read any media now! Ha! It spins giving noises (not beeping) and windows recognize the drive but media isn't being read. Can't book from it either.

Bummer. If it isn't playing any media, then it wouldn't boot either. Is it still the same after the usual remedies - remove & re-insert, uninstall from device driver?

BTW, as I'm going to be returning my current ND-6500a, I flashed it back to the factory firmware and the beeps still persist. I had been writing/verifying writes fine with TY DVD+R media and Philips CD-R but now verification after writing gives me errors on TDK DVD+RW on both the 2.02c & 2.23 firmwares.

Yup. Nothing. Called dell and the guy said they can replace it with either an IDE (that's what he said) brand or a sony one. I said I want to try them both so he will ship both, one after the other.

IDE brand - I'm familiar with that one. Turned out to be the NEC. Did you call Tech Support or Customer Care?

Tech support, customer care will just re-direct you to tech support. Yeah I thought it might be NEC because he said that's the model I have right now.

Customer Care was initially going to redirect me but then took care of it as it was within 21 days of purchase of the drive.

hi there...just posting the temp as i said earlier...
been using the laptop for about 30mintues - all ive done is surf the net.
Temperatures (all in deg Celcius)
CPU 42
HDD 39
Graphics 50
DIMM 41

are these normal for 30mintues of web surfing?
As a side note, I don't think the fans have turned on at all.

Completely normal. As comparison, mine right now are:

HDD 35
GPU 45
DIMM 42

Thought I'd chime in..
Just got my 8600c. 1.6ghz, 256mb ram(512 to be installed soon), 60gb 5400 rpm toshiba hd, wuxga screen, 64mg nvidia card.

No fans on the bottom. Bottom feels very hot under the HD and CPU.

I cant seem to get fanGUI to recognize the fan sensors, so I dont know how fast they're going or if I can control them.

Temps:

CPU: 49
GPU: 57
DIMM: 45
HD: 45

This is just browsing and plugged into AC running 1.6ghz speed.

Is the fan always on with this laptop?
Does Dell have a tool for measuring this too?

Thanks!

After clicking "Enable temperature control", the fan readings showed up.

Currently it says both fans are "slow", with the top fan at 3000 and bottom fan at 4800 rpm.

Temp readings have gone down to:

CPU: 40
GPU: 52
HD: 44
DIMM: 40

I thought I was hearing the fan earlier but I guess they were actually just off.. I was hearing the HDD! Not loud, just not silent. This is all while plugged in.. not sure how things will work when mobile.
