Compaq X1000 vs Alienware Sentia

I'm moving this post here since it was sensored by the Alienware moderator who felt it was unfair to make the comparison based on specs alone. I am very interested in hearing opinions regarding these two machines, as well as any other notebooks that compete with them at this price point and specs.

I cannot begin to say how disappointed I am that Alienware would put their name on this machine. I've been shopping pretty hard and while I am leaning toward the heavier A51M, I was very tempted by the idea of a light performer like the X1000 or the Sentia. I have been waiting to see what the Sentia would bring into the ring, but this is pathetic at first glance.

I've emboldend the points that I think seperate the two. I picked a similar priced set from each company. If someone would like to, they can make a comparison at any level. I just picked one around $2k.

In another thread I expressed concern that Alienware may start making sacrifices to increase their market share. Well, I think this is an example of just that. The Sentia looks like a Packard Bell hiding in an Alienware Skin. Yuck.

Perhaps in time I'll be amazed by the hidden power of the Intel video, but me thinks not... Score one for compaq, first out of the gate and still champ in the Cetrino world.

Bring out the A51M! (I sure hope this pricing doesn't indicate an outrageously priced lappy coming our way...)

I already said in the Alienware post, but I will say it again here.... Compaq X1000 is much better than Alienware SENTIA.

I agree. What I can't understand is why Alienware would put out such an obviously inferior product. Surprising.

I don't know what alienware is thinking by offering a notebook with such a crappy graphics solutions. The compaq is a much better notebook, because of the 9200 and the 15.4 screen in my opinion.

At this point, the only thing preventing me from comitting to the Compaq is the lack of a DVD-R/W drive (Which seems to be changing in the 1015US) and my curiosity surrounding the soon to debut Sager's and Area 51M.

Yea, seriously and doomer didnt even add the 3 year warranty to the sentia. The price would skyrocket plus it is severely lacking compared to the much cheaper compaq. The alienware sentia case might be sexy but the hardware sure as hells not.

looking forward to the review of the alienware 51m though

Try: www.compaq.com and www.alienware.com

I used the configurator form each site to get those prices this morning.

Oops, I must have screwed up after all, elitemetal. My humble apologies. I've corrected the original post, now that the edit feature has been fixed.

Here's the corrected prices for the units as shown (before rebates):

X1000: $2,378.99
Sentia: $2,535.00

I am not sure why the price diffences. My bad...

I was also surprised by the pricing of the Sentia at first. Then I configured the Dell 600m and a Sentia, both with the cuurent promotions each company was offering adn similiar configurations, and the Sentia was $100 cheaper. The only significant difference was the dell has a 32mb Radeon 9000 and the Sentia has Intel integrated card.

I think the price of the Area 51m is going to be higher than expected, considering the price of the Sentia with its components and the components that will be in the Area 51m.

9200

I owned the X1000 for a couple of weeks and it's a nice machine. I picked up a refurb Dell D800 that blows away both the Compaq and Alienware for around $1450 (before taxes). That includes a 3 year next day onsite warranty. You can't beat that. The original specs are below as well as what I upgraded too. You might want to give the D800 a look.

Original specs:
1.6 GHz P-M
GF4 4200 w/64MB RAM
256 MB RAM
20 GB 4200 RPM hd
24X CD
15.4" 1920X1200 WUXGA Ultrasharp
Win2K

Current specs:
1.6 GHz P-M
GF4 4200 w/64MB RAM
768 MB RAM
60 GB 7200 RPM hd
CDRW/DVD combo
15.4" 1920X1200 WUXGA Ultrasharp
XP Pro

Latitude?

How are home users supposed to be able to purchase Dell Latitudes if they only make them available to "Small business" customers?

You can purchase from the small business section. When it asks for business just type your name or make something up. The business section is almost always cheaper then home.
LoL! Wow, I didn't know you could do that.

How much does the M60 weigh, and what's the battery life like?

hi

i was thinking of getting the area 51m2 but maybe ill get that later on as a desktop replacement.. but for now i need a new school laptop.. i read i think in the general sager forums that the 1.7 is comparable to the pentium 4m series, if not beating it, and weighing less, draining less battery, and running cooler.. is that true? Also.. for those that have tried all 3 res's.. how much better is the WUXGA from the WSXGA? Does it make that much difference, or very little to notice? One of the main things that is holding me back is I want a subwoofer in it, and a 60 gb 7200 rpm hd.. I can probably just get headphones w/ great bass (any suggestions? so far i tried some plantronics(sp?) and Radio Shack ones that work bomb..) and be good until i get the 51m2.. but is it possible to just order the hd from some site and swap it into the COMPAQ X1000? Also just running word, aim, simple stuff like that, how long can this battery run? I already saw the tech tv review of it's movie life.. so i'm debating against this.. or even waiting for that new 3750 / 3760 whatever from sager.. but the graphics blows so i doubt it.. thanks
