New colors and Sager warranty info.

Perhaps this is a silly thing to ask, BUT .. I've seen warranties voided on worse things..

It's about the new colors -- which, by the way, have edged me closer to buying a Sager. But .. say for instance, the computer breaks down and you have to send to Sager for repairs.

Will the folks at Sager look at the case and say, "Uh oh .. this case has obviously been modified since it was painted (and most likely taken apart and put back together from someone who wasn't 'authorized' to make that sort of modification). So we will now void your warranty with us.."

I mean, they could claim that taking it apart, painting it, and putting it back together could make the warranty null and void. Also I suppose they could say that the paint job itself could have caused damage if it wasn't done correctly (like paint being sprayed into the vents, hitting other components and/or simply making those vents less useful).

Perhaps I'm just being a bit paranoid here. I'm simply curious though if the people at Sager know about this and/or do or don't care that their cases are being painted/modded and that they will still honor warranty claims regardless (I hope so!).

That's why it says all over our site when you select a custom color, any repair work is done by Color-Ware. Tech support is still through Sager, and any replacement parts still come from Sager. When you buy one with custom colors, not only is it tested by Sager before being shipped, it's tested before and after painting by colorware to eliminate defective parts before the customer gets it. Our policy is the same as Alienware's for the money back guarantee with the special order custom colors.

Yes Sager knows about this. Sager hooked us up with the company to do it. I had been asking and trying to get something going a while back.

Uhhh. Kay. I didn't quite understand, so just say yes or no: So if the user damages the Sager somehow, will it be replaced with the color?

The only thing they don't color is the 2nd optional battery. The warranty work if they need to physically work on it, it's done through them and yes you will get back the same color system as you sent in =)

I figured that anything to do w/ the any warranty claims on the colorized case itself would go thru Color-ware.

But I guess what I was concerned with was that Sager could void the warranties on these things because of the "tampering" (i.e. the coloring) of the cases. So, what you're saying is Sager knows about this and won't void any warranties w/ these laptops then?

And as I said above I figured that Color-ware would take care of any warranty claims associated w/ the colorized cases, but from what you said above let me get this straight -- that outside of the painted cases -- it's will be handled by Sager and you just like any regular laptop you sell, correct?

Thanks,

Joe

If you get custom paint, all warranty work is done by colorware. Parts still come from Sager whether Sager covers it, or colorware pays for it. All you have to be concerned with is any time you would need to send it in for repair, you would send it to Colorware.

Wow..thanks for the quick reply -- on Sunday, no less!

But ..

I guess I do have some qualms about having warranty work done to a company (before now anyway) I've never heard of as opposed to Sager itself. Hmm.

And .. here's another question -- so, basically if I get one of these nifty colored laptops, I wouldn't be buying from you (PCTorque), I'd be buying them from this Color-ware outfit?

Hmm again.

Guess I'll continue to do more research before buying..

No, it's buying from us not them. We're using them to paint it and since they paint it, they warranty it. They are the ones that painted for Alienware.

It's only for the 5660 systems. When you go to the system builder you will see a pull down menu for custom colors.

Ok, that helps allieviate my qualms *somewhat* anyway.

But .. (there's that word again!) I just worry about going w/ someone (i.e. Color-ware) that I've never heard of before.

I mean, I checked on "resellerratings.com" and there is nothing there on them. Granted they are probably new to the scene (i.e. out of Alienware's umbrella) but when I spend $2K on a computer, I want to make sure the company standing behind it is someone I can trust.

Sager, yes. PCTorque, seemingly yes. Color-ware? Eh .. dunno.

Decisions, decisions..

I understand your concern and there's always the option to stay with the standard color and it's business as usual without a 3rd party being involved.

OK...

Has anyone ever dealt with the folks at Color-ware? Experiences good or bad?

Perhaps I should ask in other places too, since this is apparently a relatively new company.

Or .. I suppose I could be a guinea-pig-type creature (not sure if I want a $2K one though .. yikes!)

Again .. decisions, decisions ..

Using bad form and replying to my own post ..

Did a little search last night whilest waiting for downloads at a LAN party and saw where Color-ware *does* have a satisfactory rating by the BBB (according to bbb.org, anyway).

Yeah, I know -- sometimes you have to take what they say w/ a few grains of salt. But at least a "satisfactory" rating does give me a bit more piece of mind should I go the colorized route.

Thanks for the input, all! The forums truly are the best.
