Dell Power Adapter

Well, something ran over my Dell power adapter and now I got two deep and sharp gashes through it and not sure I want to risk it lest I inadvertently dry my laptop that way (if that's not possible, do tell me.)

So I'm wondering if this is covered under the warranty and if there's anything I should be careful of saying.

Also just in case I can't get the warranty does anyone know which power adapter is the one for the i8600c? I was browsing the parts and accessories and none of them say they're for the 8600.

Thanks.

physical damage is almost never covered under a standard warranty

My Inspiron 8600's power adapter has the model number HP-OQ065B83, as shown at http://www.laptopbatteries.biz/AC-Ad...Laptops45.html but I can't say if that is the same one for a 8600C
The sticker on the bottom of my laptop says to use either a PA-10 or PA-12, and my power adapter also says "PA-12 Family" on it.

Yeah, I tried looking for those things on the Dell website but they're not there although the model looks the same.

Anyway, decided to put some electrical tape over the cuts, although some of the tiny metal wires did get cut is that okay? It works, I'm just afraid something might go crispy because of it.

I crushed my power cable under my army cot... I field stripped the casing back, wrapped electrical tape around the inner (positive dc) white coatings, then wrapped the silver ground wires back, and taped them too.. .works fine.

If you are concerned, do the fix, plug into 120vac then measure the 19.5 VDC out on the end that is supposed to go into the Lappy.

If wires are exposed, I would discontinue use until you get it fixed or replaced. It may be working, but you won't know if it is shorting/screwing up your battery or laptop until it actually fails.

If it is just the wires that are the frayed/severed, reconnect them yourself or have someone who knows electronics reconnect them for you.

I have an I8600 through my job, so let me check my adapter and I will post the Model #. I don't have it with me, so I will post when I get out of work. I have the 90w version; there is also a 65w version available for this laptop.

Specs from the I8600 (without printer/serial ports) User manual:

AC Adapter
Input voltage 90–264 VAC
Input current (maximum) 1.7 A
Input frequency 47–63 Hz
Output current 3.34 A (continuous) (65 W)
4.62 A (continuous) (90 W)
Output power 65 W (standard) or 90 W
Rated output voltage 19.5 VDC

Any adapter that fits these specs should work, baring that the plug fits the laptop.

I have the PA-10 for my laptop. I checked Dell's site and the power adapter models PA-10 and PA-12 both have the same specs. They say that the PA-12 is for the Latitude D series, and the PA-10 is for the D Series Plus the I1150.

I would go for the PA-10 it is $59.99 as oppossed to the PA-12 which is $80.00.

I would also give Dell a quick call and ask them about the above adapters. Their site is very light on info for many of their accessories.
