Hello,

is there a way to have lineout rather than speaker out from my inspiron 8600?
I'd rather not buying a docking system.......

thank you

It's already there - on the left side of your 8600, the one closest to the front, with a head-phone symbol next to it.

Yes, there are 2 plugs: one is the microphone and the other is the speaker-out.

What I'm looking for is a lineout (which diffears from a speakerout because the lineout is not amplified).

I don't know what are you looking for, but I use my laptop with external speakers and they work fine with the headphone jack.

Greetings.

would the usb2 ext soundcard slowdown compared to using the internal soundcard?
some people believe the usb processing time makes the whole ext. soundcard not worth it while playing games. What do ya think?
Also, howdo you disable the internal soundcard?

regarding plugging the speakers in the headphones plug, works fine but you then let the signal being amplified twice.

How about the spdif out through the s-video port. Is that also amplified?

If the SPDIF out doesn't help, I've seen this pcimia card that has gotten good reviews. http://us.creative.com/products/prod...&product=10769
The only complain I've heard from anyone is that it hijacks your onboard audio which isn't a big problem anyway.

good point I completely forgot about the spdif-out
I'll see what I can do with it.
In general terms Do pcmcia soundcards suck less resources than usb2 external soundcards?
I'm new to pcmcia stuff and really I haven't got a clue whether they're slower/compatible with games etc. etc.
I only know they're expensive

thanks

Does the i8600c (newer version) still have SPDIF capability and if so how on earth do I get the proper cable to use it?

Thanks,

Martian

check if you have a 7 pin port on the back and you'll need something like this:

Interesting. I thought that it was just an S-video out port. Do you know where I could get that cable? Part/model #?

Thanks!

The part number looks to be 044ctv although I think this converter is universal to all 7 pin s-video ports. I believe you can get it from dell's site but they overprice on these type of things usually so I suggest ebay where you can get it for less than $10 :

Thanks a lot mich43L. This is interesting because I went back to look at the Owner's Manual and they only talk about the S-video out & an adapter to convert it to composite video but nothing about audio out of that port. In the latter instance, the manual recommends using the headphone out port for audio.

Thanks for the part number and Ebay link. Those are going pretty cheap. Is the audio out with that cable SPDIF or just composite? It doesn't look like SPDIF in the picture.

Thanks,

Martian

1 RCA for SPDIF out, 1 RCA for composite video out and a 4 pin S Video out. The S Video connector on the i8600 is 7 pins.

"1 RCA for SPDIF out"

is it non-ampliefied?
Because my speakers don't have an spdif-in and definitively not an rca spdif in, what sort of cable/desktop speakers would you advice me to buy?

regards
Luca

also considering the creative pcmcia, although 80 pounds for more sound quality and probably not gain any games performance is too much

You are absolutely correct, Each Hit. I took a look at the S-Video out of my camcorder and it is a 4-pin. Now why would Dell enable it for audio and not tell us? Nothing about the audio connection in the S-video in the Manual or any documentation that I could find on the 8600.
