8790 and PAL TV-out troubles.

Having some troubles outputting to a PAL TV here in Finland. I've updated the BIOS and gotten the latest Sager official drivers, but even trying all 3 formats in use in Finland (PAL-B, G, and H) the TV still seems to get a black and white image. I've tried a couple different S-video -> RCA, same results.

Anyone have any ideas?

You may have been shipped a US (NTSC) tuner by mistake.
Open up the bottom of the laptop and check the sticker on the TV tuner model.
There were a few 8890 laptops shipped overseas with US tuner modules in them.

To clarify it's not TV tuning but video output from the 9700 TV-out that I'm having problems with. To my knowledge all graphics cards that can produce TV-out signals can produce them in both PAL and NTSC formats.

Doh! should have read your post more closely.
Sorry khu, yes you did specify TV-OUT.
I must admit I have never thought of TV-out being in different formats (PAL vs NTSC).
Having never connected my 8890 to a TV I have never tested this. Might have to go and buy a TV cable.

Before I do that have you checked in the control panel -> display -> settings -> advanced -> displays
You should have the TV out tab active. That allows you to set the TV format I believe.

I will go and buy a cable though and test this. Might take a couple of days before I get back to you.

Yes, I've set all PAL formats using the menu you mention, but none of them produce a color image on the TVs I've tried it with.

I have been meaning to get a TV out cable for my laptop so I will buy one this afternoon and investigate. Get back to you.

Well, the audio is not a concern to me, it works fine. It's just the image that's still in black and white on Finnish PAL TVs even when I select PAL-out from the laptop.

I am back. Finally got enough cables adaptors etc to test this out.

Question for you - when you have the TV connected and you get black and white is the output image source that of your desktop or of the TV application?

If it is your desktop (clone or extended mode) is that in colour on your TV?

If it is your TV application output then there are some other options we can try.
