Thread Starter
Thought I mention this for those of you who are concidering this new Gateway Athlon 64 notebook.

This is the new 7422GZ
Mobile AMD Athlon™ 64 processor 3400+, Dual Layer DVD±RW/CD-RW drive, 15.4" widescreen, 80.0GB hard drive; 1.0GB DDR RAM, 6-in-1 media reader, Mobile Radeon 9550

So I noticed this myself and I wondered if Gateway considers this to be an upgraded version of the 7405GX, since most of its components seem to be equal or better.

Questions about it though for hopefully someone who knows more about it than I do. This is the first time I've heard of the Mobile 9550, how does it compare to the 64mb version of the 9600 or 9600 pro?

Additionally, while I suspect that it probably still has the same HD, does anyone know if this still has the unbearably slow 4200rpm drive?

Thanks

Thanks for the heads-up. I went to BB and got a refund for the difference that I paid a week ago.

So far I am very happy with this machine.

FYI, it has the Radeon 9600 in it, though it says 9550 on the box.

Not that I don't trust you but how do you know that?

Not to mention why would Gateway put 9550 on the box everywhere if it was a 9600? Wouldn't they correct that.

I would only trade up if they put a better video card in, like a 128mb Radeon 9800 or something, or perhaps added a large 7200rpm hard drive. But I can add the drive myself. My rule with hardware is, buy it and don't look back. Saves you a lot of pain, lol.

All the 9550 is, is a underclocked 9600, but multiple sources have stated that the 9550 in the 7422GX and the 9600 in the 7405GX are clocked exactly the same. Mabey they wanted it to look more like a value system. I am confused however, because having the 9600 label would've given them an excuse to raise the price. But if it's exactly the same like it appears why the 9550 label. It's all very confusing, but all that will matter to me when I get my own is performance.

yep - looked all over the web for 9600 vs 9550 comparisons. The desktop 9550 is a "declocked" 9600. Both the 9600 and 9550 desktop cards run faster than the mobile version. So effectively, for the Gateway, they're the same video card.

So, I took my still unopened 7405GX back today and picked up the 7522 for the same price.

They weren't very happy about it, but there was nothing they could do.

For once, being indecisive about something PAID OFF.

When I go to device manager it lists under display adapters:
ATI MOBILITY Radeon 9600/9700 Series
Everest says:
ATI Mobility Radeon 9600/9700 (M10/M11)
Is that trustworthy or does one really need to open the lappy and look inside?

Regarding the mislabeled boxes, a corporate friend of mine was of the opinion that computer sales profits are so slim that if a box was designed earlier in the production run and later there are some "minor" changes to the computer design, it would not be worth the expense of re-doing or re-labeling all the boxes.

ATI’s RADEON 9550 is down-clocked RADEON 9600 featuring 128MB of DDR SDRAM memory with 128-bit bus, Chinese web-site HardSpell.com believes. Graphics cards based on the RADEON 9550 will work at 250MHz/400MHz speeds for chip/memory, 75MHz below core clock-speed provided by the RADEON 9600. Additionally, ATI may roll-out a version of the RADEON 9550 with 64-bit bus. Sources assume that the price of the RADEON 9550 that is expected to be formally announced in early April will be in the range of $70 - $85.

All graphics cards based on the RADEON 9550 and RADEON 9600-series VPUs are based on processors code-named RV350 and RV360. From architectural stand-point these two chips are same and feature 4 pixel and 2 vertex pipelines, but the RV360 is made using more advanced 0.13 micron low-k fabrication technology.
Since the gateways are clocked at 300/200, whether you call it a 9550 or a 9600, its the same chip.

load the omega drivers, overclock as much as you dare, and have a ball gaming on your laptop.

Ummm....sorry to nitpick but no, the gov't does not want to do that. Presuming you overpaid and are getting a *refund*, you are getting back your own money which you lent interest-free to the government for a year.

Blast, now that the sale is over, that means I have to earn just that much more before I can buy one. Oh well. I just started work today, so it'll be a while yet anyway.
