Overclocking the Pentium-M - Page 4

It seems as if Dell used several PLLs. The CY28346 has a SMBus- functionality. Therefore Inspiron 8600 with this PLL are overclockable.
The sound card is the first item that won´t function. Thats normal. Do not try too much. The second item that will fail is your HD- controller (because of an increased PCI)
To the ICS 950813 - I think I still have 2 of these PLL´s.
If there is any interest...
One problem - I am from Germany...

Stichl, is there a chance that this could work with the original 950810?

Pins 54 and 55 determine CPU FSB speed.
Currently set at 54 = is High, and 55 = Low (ground), which equals 100MHz.
If it is set at 54 = High and 55 = High, then it would be set at 133MHz CPU.
So, if we lifted IC leg 55 off ground, then jumpered it to pin leg 54..............

This would also keep PCI bus correct at 33Mhz, so audio and HD will still operate properly.

It sucks then that the sound card is the first to go, as I'm hardly getting any performance increase when overclocking from 1.7 to 1.76, I'll probably leave it as is then as I'm not too sure on the stability at 1.76ghz anyway.

@ RobsTV... no chance...sorry...

I attempted it before reading your reply, but ran into problems.
After bending pin 56 out of the way, it broke off.
I ended up aborting the pin jumper method because I had to tie pin 56 to pin 55, and this keeps both low. After an hour of messing with it, that was the only way I could get solder to stick to the sliver on the IC that used to be pin 56.

At least I was able to get it running again.

I would rather have my tech with 20 years younger eyes, and steadier hands, use solder pen torch, and have him remove and replace IC with proper one.

I think you need a microscope to do a good job...
When I had soldered my new IC I thought it was ok. Only with microscope I recognized little short cicuits through the solder.
Soldering under microscope is very simple, too, when dealing with such overall sizes.

Its a performance boost from 1.6 to 1.77 for me because of all my photoshop work... but yeah, its not much and it sure takes the hell outta the battery at full performance.

Also, Aquamark3 increased my CPU mark almost over 1500 after this OC

It will be interesting to see if people can overclock their sonoma based laptops.

Hm... Does that means that i'm getting a pll that is not overclockable?

Whats the difference between the 8600s anyways? I can overclock mines but some ppl can't... is dell using different types of mobo for each 8600?
No - it is the same Mobo - it is only another PLL with the same function...
These PLL are all pin-compatible. You can use a cyrix, ics... and so on.
Dell does not want to be dependent from one supplier, only.
Therfore there are more possibilities...

Moreover it won´t take much more energy from your battery when overclocking... this is wrong...
overclocking is interesting at cpus with high multiplier, that is to say fast cpus. here you will get the most advantage when overclocking. thus 10% overclocking with a 2 GHz Dothan will give 200MHz boost...

So, does this means that I can't overclock my processor?
I was hesitant to mention this earlier but since some of you guys are now replacing PLL's and lifting pins has anyone looked at the possibility of jumpering pins on the processor or the motherboard socket to change the mutiplier? I remember taping pins on my Slot 1 pentium 2 to overclock it and I heard of people jumpering pins to overclock socket based chips. I'm content with 1.6 GHz but thought I would throw the suggestion out there.

If you can't OC in BIOS or using a Program, don't even bother. You'll have a higher chance of messing up and completely destroying the CPU or Mobo by doing an overclock physically

It works on the D600 as well, I clocked a 1.6 banias all the way up to 1.9ghz, and it was stable!!! Of course the sound didn't work at that high of speed.

By the way, does anybody know of a way to overclock it automatically when windows starts, so I dont have to run the program each time?

CPUFSB is a nice tool... www.podien.de

Indeed it is.. But is is possible to use it in Inspiron 8600? I'm slightly confused to operate that software...
I can overclock my inspiron 8600 using the clockgen and its true that above 110 fsb, the sound will be gone.

Is there a possiblity to LOCK the AGP/PCI at 66/33 ? That would open a possibility for HIGH overclocking

I wonder if getting a usb or pcmia sound card would work? I was thinking of getting one anyway just so it wouldn't use as much CPU.
