Installing new hard drive 7700!

I want to install my 60g 7200 rpm hard drive in my 7700. During the install I have to do the f6 thing. But I have no floppy drive to load the drivers from. Is there a way around this? Maybe using a thumb drive or something?

As far as I knew all 7700's came with an external floppy drive?

Yea, you can stage a XP cd that already has the drivers you need. Called "slipstreaming"

Are you going to be using dual hard drives in a raid configuration? If so you do need an external floppy to install the Raid drivers. I have read on these forums that is the only way to install the Raid drivers. If you are not using RAID at all then you just need to install Win XP normally. Let us know what happens, because I am wanting to do this sometime in the next few months also. good luck

If he needs to press F6, i guess it's during the first stage of installing windows xp.

U'll need the RAID driver supplied by alienware, just extract it to a disk, press f6 at first stage of install and insert your disk.

BTW, splistreaming is used for extracting and injecting a service pack into a i386 folder for winnt, xp, 2000 and 2003 for an install with the latest service pack.

call AW and tell them that you need a floppy drive and they'll send you it...i needed the floppy drive for the card reader and i needed the floppy drive to start the drivers but mine didn't come with one either...now AW has the floppy drive included, but the did'nt back then with the pre-orders. so call them and tell them your problem and they'll be sure to send you one.

It was orginally termed for that yes, but its been distorted into adding anything to base install CD, SP's, drivers, security patches etc.

Yes, that is *ONE* use for it. The other use, is to inject drivers into the install, much like Dell, Gateway, Etc. do with their "OEM" Disks.

Slipstream is only used to inject SP files into i386.

For the driver and apps, this is unattended section of the installation.

I recently passed the Microsoft certif 070-270 win xp pro and they always used ths slipstream term only for SP.

But in fact, it's never mind, we call it as u want, sorry

Unattended means you set the unattended.sif file to answer the normal install prompts during an install, like the time zone and other happy crappy stuff.

Keep on those exams by the way, are you headed for your MCSE?

I'm going ahead of certif that should be usefull for work, like win xp, sms, lotus notes,... but not especially mcse.

Are u also going ahead certifs ?

No already am, its a requirement for my job. MSCE+I and MCDBA, MCSA of course as a byproduct. NT4 track, then Windows 2000 and most recently upgraded to 2003.

In don't think it actaully says anything about a tech, we have guys with every cert under the sun that could not even make a bootable floppy in a pinch.

haha, I was told that I dont need to re-install my os so NO FLOPY fir me!
This thing runs like crap ( as far as windows goes) takes like 3 sec for the start button to respond!

No not really, like I said it's an occupational requirement. I find the tests miserable to take, damn red bar/green bar crap will make you psycho. And I never get any type of merit increase for it.

No merit for incerasing them ?

I pass those certifs for jobs but also for growing in the company, this is the merit, and in the same way, i shared some merits with alienware by ordering a laptop
