The Greatest Antivirus

I need help picking out an antivirus. My norton internet security just expired (and I am SOOO glad it did...). I need a new antivirus/firewall. I'm trying to decide among these:
Kaspersky Antivirus and Firewall
ESET NOD32
Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security
Zonealarm Pro Firewall
McAfee Virus Scan 7.1 Enterprise from office

What do you think? Is the McAfee good because it is enterprise edition? Is it the latest edition?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

I use avast. free and doesn't really use as much resources as mcaffee or norton. You should definintely add it to your list.

Been happy with PC-cillin. Had been using Norton but was slowing down systems way too much. Have a 3 PC household so got the PC-Cillin three pack from Amazon. After rebate was about $20 per PC.

I find F-Prot a very good antivirus, firewall Outpost for windows is great...
Also these are what I would also use if I did not have the above installed.
Kerio Personal Firewall 4 (free for home and personal use http://www.kerio.com/kpf_download.html) www.kerio.com, AVG antivirus (freeware & Shareware version) http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php
avast! Home Edition http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home2.html and we have Sygate Personal Firewall...

Yup. Definitely consider Avast! (AV) and Sygate (firewall).

I used McAfee for a while, but it had an error where it would shut down virus protection when going into hibernation, then fail to restart it when coming out of hibernation - pretty bad flaw to have on a laptop. McAfee support wasn't able to fix it.

I ended up moving to Norton's System Works since I was able to 'upgrade' free as a McAfee user. Worked fine, but after a few months the 'LiveUpdate' died and no amount of tinkering would revive it (and I had 5+ months left on my subscription). Uninstalls and reinstalls were painful due to the registration stuff Norton includes in their products now. After 2 tries of reinstalling, I gave up and decided to move on to something more reliable.

I decided to try the free virus packages - AVG, AVAST and AntiVir. Avast won me over due to stability in getting updates. I've used Avast for the last 4 or 5 months and it's been perfect - I can't see going back to Norton or McAfee.

For firewalls, I use a router and the WinXp firewall. Seems to work fine and I score 100% on all the port scans.

I haven't heard of Avast. I've been using AVG. Is Avast really better that I should download it or AVG is good enough too?

I downloaded avg about a month ago after my norton expired and they won't support my version anymore. no problems getting updates. would be interested in others feedback on avg, too. (haven't heard of avast, either)

also, if by any chance you have sbc yahoo dsl, i just saw they offer computer associates' "ez antivirus" as one of your included premium services. Haven't heard of it before. Maybe someone else can comment on whether it is a good product?

p.s., for firewall, i've been happy with zonealarm (free)

I tried AVG 7.0 and Avast. Both worked fine, but I did have an occasion where AVG wasn't able to connect for updates. There were quite a few report of this online as well.

I also tried AntiVir - which was the best by far in terms of minimal resource utilization. However, it's 'automatic' updates weren't very automatic (timer driven - comptuer off at the scheduled time = no update), and it downloaded the entire ~2.0mb definition file each time regardless of the number of updates.

Avast was a 'set and forget' type deal -exactly what I want AV to be. It even updates the virus scan engine along with the definitions, if needed - you never have to touch it. I don't know if I'd go through the trouble of unstalling a working copy of AVG to move to Avast, but it's certainly worth checking out.

I just started loaded Avast Antivirus for some of my friends (you know, the ones who didn't have any virus protection and are too cheap to pay for it). So far I havn't heard any complaints. Several of them found viruses and Avast took care of them. It seems to be doing it's job. I've always used Norton but they are starting to annoy me so I'm considering giving Avast a shot on at least 1 of my systems.

Never bothered with the anti-virus stuff myself. Just re-ran the Microsoft Malware detection webpage: http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx and my computer is still clean. Just prefer not to give in to the virus hype and surrender vital system resources to software that really isn't doing a damn thing.

I agree in part. If you are reasonably sensible in what you download and what you click on - the likelyhood of getting a virus is low. Given the computing power and resources of machines today, though - the minimal resource drain imposed by a decent AV seems like a fair trade-off for better protection.

You need to click on "register" and type in an email address. That is, you open the program itself (C: -> Program Files -> Avast (or whichever is the parent directory of Avast) -> ashAvast, then click on Registration -> Program Registration). This is NOT a problem.

running norton fw and av here. and i do a lot of DCC work, but i dont really notice norton hogging any resources.

LOL, I jinxed myself with previous post that I had no AVG problems This happened to me today for the first time and I didn't remember this comment until AFTER I uninstalled and reinstalled both AVG and ZoneAlarm ( I'd gotten a message on AVG from ZA because of a recent update "changing" what ZA recognized, so I figured that was behind my problem). Also, the give you the message "Check your Internet settings" so you think the problem is at yoru end ) Anyway, I was fnally abple to update Really glad this post was here .
