The Best Antivirus

Thread Starter
I need help picking out an antivirus. My norton internet security just expired (and I am SOOO glad it did...). I need a new antivirus/firewall. I'm trying to decide among these:
Kaspersky Antivirus and Firewall
ESET NOD32
Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security
Zonealarm Pro Firewall
McAfee Virus Scan 7.1 Enterprise from office

What do you think? Is the McAfee good because it is enterprise edition? Is it the latest edition?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

NOD32 is very good and Symantec Anti-Virus is pretty good as well. The former uses very few system resources while the latter can be a bit of a pig at times. I'm not a McAfee or Kaspersky fan.

WHy do you like Symantec? It's aweful-such a resource hog....
Is NOD32 hard to use? Is it fast?
I'm using the McAfee Enterprise Edition now. It just picked up a trojan.
Norton never picked anything up....

out of your list Kaspersky Antivirus and Firewall is by far the best one but it is also the hardest to use as the result of the interface being more annoying then it has to be. Second would be Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security, and i wouldnt touch McAfee because its bloatware and just isnt worth it compared to the other AV

Have you considered AVG? I use it and can check ~ 50 Gb of files in about an hour. Daily updates are seamless, too.

Symantec products in general have always been a resource hog and slim down performance on your system for from odd crazy reason. From their very first version until now, it has always been like that...

I remember a very nice application called "PC TOOLS" back in the DOS heydays, it was awesome, until Symantec killed them. Same goes with IBM virus software as well ... *sigh *

Mcafee is what I use now.

As far as antivirus software is concerned, Kaspersky or NOD32. NOD32 is light on the resources but lacks in the area of trojan detection. Kaspersky is pretty much the undisputed king of detection. It catches pretty much everything. I formerly used NOD32 but am currently running Kaspersky's demo. I am not noticing any slow downs compared to NOD32. Try the demo versions and decide for yourself.

I use PC cillin and am happy

I've used both Norton and Mcaffee Products in the past, and I agree that Norton adversely affects system performance greatly, and Mcaffee is bloatware, with all kinds of extra crap you dont need to ever see, but I've found that Mcaffee is the best of the two for me.

It's downloading updates all the time, and it catches things Norton never did.

Never tried anything else though, there could be something better for all I know!

AVG is pretty good but only if you buy it the free was is crap. But norton I would stay away from...mcafee is great I think the best in your list......but I would get AVG I believe its cheaper too..

and it has a small footprint,e specially if you turn off the always on control panel (which still allows you to be protected and update) and only takes about 6 megs of ram. norton is a PIG, as is McAffee.

Also look at Avast free version. I am an ex norton user and am very satisfied with this one.

what are your thoughts on panda antivirus, it came with system mechanic so i just installed it but i was going to get pc-cillin sometime in the near future

AVG antivirus.

I think AVG or Avast! free editions, with Zonealarm free would be fine for most (unless you frequent, um, 'questionable' sites.
Plus, immunize your system and update your hosts file with Spybot S&D and together your system will be well take care of. And the price is right! (All FREE!)

(Just remember to install AV/Firewall/Anti-Spyware BEFORE it's too late.. if something gets on your system, there's a good chance that it will corrupt/prevent future installations - then it'll be too late)

P.S. Use Firefox

AVG without a doubt. It's just as fast as the others, detects just as many viruses (Just as effective), has LESS advertisements than the others (AVG has none, others have some), and best of all, IT IS COMPLETELY FREE. Can't go wrong with that.

That is why when Maximum PC did an antivirus roundup last year and compared AVG6 to Norton, PC-Cillin, McAfee, etc, they declared AVG the winner. Just as good, but FREE.

And this year, they awarded AVG 7 a "Softy" award, as one of the best ten computer programs available. Why? Because it works great, has very frequent definition updates, AND IS FREE.

I don't know if anyone tried CA's Ez anti-virus. I used to own Norton, and whenever it starts to check, it eat resources like crazy. it also takes forever to scan my 400gb desktop (one time it took almost 8 hours). I'm currently use Ez-Anitvirus now. it's fast, not as fancy as norton, but not taking as much resource as Norton.

Avast

Never had a problem. I am ex-Norton user, and was so glaad when I decided to give avast a try. Avast or AVG, can hurt to try, their free, all you have invested is your time to register and install.

NOD32, AVG, and Kaspersky are the best AV progs out. Older versions of Symantec AV Corporate, like 7 and 8 are also very good.
