Don't know if you are referring me. I did not say PCI-EXPRESS=Upgrades. what I have said is i6000 utilizes either 915GM or 915GMS chipset and does not equip with a PCI-EXPRESS port. Having no port means there will be no upgrades unless we are talking about a whole systemboard replacement or the 32bit PCMICA slot Video card "upgrades".

I went through Dell's EPP site and configured a 9200 and 6000 identically - the 6000's list price came out to $2,145, the 9200's at $2,320. Only a $175 difference. Considering you get the 17" screen and the MR 9700 with the 9200, it seems the 9200 is a better deal. (Especially since the EPP discount on the 9200 is 15%, and only 10% on the 6000, making the prices nearly identical.) Now, I am certainly sympathetic with people who say they do not want a 17" laptop, so the 9200 isn't nearly as good a machine for them.

So in terms of widescreen 15.4" laptops, I don't think the 6000 exactly falls into the "budget" grouping. It's simply a nice midpoint between the 12" 700m and 9200.

Good god, thank you, exactly. The 6000 is NOT cheap, I dunno why people keep saying that, nor do I understand why they would think it should be, its brand new, and it may not be blazing, but it sure isn't slow either. I was going to get the 9200, until I got to handle a 17" wide screen notebook, just realized it was a lil too much for me. And its shame I don't get the gfx card w/ the 6000, but I decided that for the new case, and the slightly improved core sys specs, i'd rather go w/ the 6000 than the 8600 Anyway, I think $1450 is a damn good deal, i'd like to see somebody find better right now on the 6000. Cant wait till it comes in!

I'm just saying the 6000 is priced a bit high, but that can be expected during initial launch.

And as for your other post. I've been able to configure a 9200 for those specs or even better specs for 1300 bucks.

Anyways you upgraded to the 60GB 7200rpm Hard Drive for 199 bucks. It's smarter to buy the hard drive seperately. It's usually cheaper and u end up with 2 hard drives.

1) the i6000 is a budget notebook. it is CHEAP. remember the old dell smartstep 200n and 250n notebooks? around 8 lbs. what about the inspiron 2500? remember the inspiron 1100 and 1150? CHEAP notebooks - the value option. the inspiron 1000's weight is just about up there.

If it is "cheap" then why does it cost more than 5160, the 1150 and the 1000? Why is it using the New Alviso chipset which costs more than the chipset being used by Dothan? If Dell wanted to make another budget notebook they should of used the chipset which supports the 400 MHz FSB. And because it is a "budget" notebook it would of made more sense, the 6000 then would of been cheaper, and Dell still could of made it weigh 6.65 lbs to satisfy the people who want that weight. And they should of stuck the Alviso in a lappy that has a graphic card for people who want to play games.

I wouldn't call the i6000 cheap. I more classify the the regular price wo/coupons under 700 bucks to be cheap. The 5160 is a pretty sturdy nice laptop. Only pitfall is its too thick and heavy.

Thats true, thats what I'm doing w/ the memory, never thought about the harddrive. I will have to look into that, its not hard to swap in a harddrive is it?

- Dave

*edit* looks like its $149.00 to buy it seperately, I guess $50 is $50, not gonna go through the hassle of changing my quote I dont think, yea, im a lazy **** Thanks for the heads up, shoulda considered that beforehand.

Oh, you mean in the past, with a huge discount, because I just customized one now, and its coming up at $1,829, lol, but if you can customize one w/ those specs, you can email the shopping cart item tonight or tomorrow morning to dave[at]puredesignstudios.com

well if u need the laptop right now then i guess go with what you can, but usually if you wait a few weeks dell S&B will sell the 60/7200 for 127 bucks.

But yes the 9200 comes up now high now, but then again I never buy a dell wo/coupons.

How many ppl here buy dell's wo the deal or coupons?

I hope you enjoy your computer, i'm considering getting that when a dedicated video card/mucho deals swing around.

I'm currious as to how the integrated video card preforms compared to the 700m one.

also you get an extra 30GB hard drive too, since you'll have the original one.

and its very easy to do the change.

Does the intergrated graphics card provide quality graphics?

Is it no good for gaming?

Does this mean the 6000 will never have an option for better graphics?

Supposed to be better than the one in the 700m, at least thats what I hear, cant confirm that, but it makes sense, and I think people are doing some light gaming on the 700m. I think its doubtful that the 6000 will have a dedicated graphics card in the future, at least for a while, the 8600 will continue for now I think. Yea, I need a computer pretty bad, I started a new job about a month ago, and I'm using a spare computer basically, so I really need a machine to develop on, just needed to save up the money, and until monday, i was goin for a 8600, but that changed. Blah, w/e, when I finally get mine, i'll let you all know how it runs games, although im sure it will be a terrific waste of time.

I'm betting the I6000 will be getting an dedicated graphics controller, probably by the end of February would be my guess. The specs had already been posted on another forum recently.

have you ever tried to max out an 1150 or 5160 with just hardware - not counting warranty, software, etc... i know someone who purchased a 5150 for THREE THOUSAND DOLLARS since he packed on every bit of hardware, etc. available. the i6000 is the budget replacement for the 5160 - just take my word for it because believe me, i know. it is NOT and i8600 replacement - that was already done with the i9200. there is NO i8700 or anything like that coming. why is it using the sonoma platform? its the FIRST ONE - doesnt mean higher end notebooks wont be coming out with it. remember what the first inspiron notebook was that was packing the centrino platform? the i600m. hardly a highend notebook, but it fit the needs of the people who bought it. Hardware progresses at a very advanced rate - the specs for the 5160 would not have been shabby at all a year ago, but now its garbage - 2 years ago it would have been faster than a top of the line inspiron 8200. damn the i6000 starts at NINE HUNDRED DOLLARS right now... if that isnt low end budget than show me what is. check this out:

Take an Inspiron 1150 - which i can assume that ALL of you think is a cheap entry notebook:

just the basics that all of you would have in your computers - a 2.8ghz processor, 1GB of memory, a 60gb hard drive, dvd burner, and you're pushing TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS before tax and shipping... so what would you say to the guy spending over 2 G's on an 1150? you got a very good notebook - not a budget cheap entry level - because you spent 2 G's on your notebook even though its an 1150? yea im sure that will happen...

For the wait I hope it’s better than the ATI x300.
