sager 5660 help, won't boot

I recently picked up a Sager 5660 notebook. I knew it had issues when I bought it, that's why it was so cheap. I would like to repair the unit. Here is the problem.....

When I first received it, I pressed the power button and it bootted up, but without any video (totally black, no light or signs of life). However, I heard it beep, and I heard the Windows "chimes" I inserted a cd, and it played the cd fine. SO, I turned it off and hooked it up to an external monitor. WHen I pushed the power button, the hard drive light came on for a second and sounded like it was going to boot, but then NOTHING. The power light stays on, and after a short period, the fans kick on and run. The cd rom opens and acts like it would work fine if the computer would boot. I insert an audio cd and play it with the "DJ" with no problems when the computer is off. I tried taking out the ram (it has 2-256 sticks).
Someone told me that it may be the motherboard. I'm hoping it is something simple. I read in anohter post that I may be able to "reset" the system somehow with removing the cmos battery?
Any help would be great. I'm still a little new to the laptop troubleshooting.

thanks in advance from a new member

Try this first, though the video issue is not going to be addressed by this.

Remove battery, remove power cord...press power button for 10 seconds. This will reset the system.

Reinsert battery and power cord. Hit power button.

Removing the CMOS battery is difficult in most laptops.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it, however it didn't work. But, I did make some progress. WHen I first received the unit, it sounded like it powered up (I could hear the windows "chimes"), but I couldn't get it to do it again. Anyway, I remembered that when I first opened the package, it was VERY cold due to just being in transit. So, I put it in my car for a little while, it's like 20 degrees out, and then turned it on. IT SHOWED SIGNS OF LIFE!!!! The screen lit up like it was going through the start up procedure. The screen froze, but it kept booting and sounded like windows started (I heard the chimes again) and it seemed to be running normal, but the screen was still frozen still. I powered it down and restarted it. the screen got a little further, but it didn't complete the boot again. It was stuck. I tried it again after about 10 minutes, and now it's back to nothing but the hard drive running for about a second and no signs of life on the screen.
I'm assuming that it is either the video card (radeon mobility 9000) or the motherboard. I checked the RAM in my other laptop and it works fine.

On the 56xx series the video is soldered to the mobo. Hence if one goes you have to replace it as a unit. That's the exact symptoms mine had. It's getting a new mobo as we speak.

sorry to say I think you syptoms are like mine and it is likely a bad vid card. My 5660 is with Sager now. They still haven't confirmed whether it was in fact the vid card that went bad and whether the mobo would need to be replaced ($800+ to replace it), but that is what I am expecting to hear from them. Emailed them about it today because they have had it a week and I didn't even get an email saying, "we received your 5660 and will let you know your options in x days" or whatever.

I inquired about a repair and they told me it would be $480 + shipping both ways to replace the mobo. That was for a refurb. Is it $800 for you because you are having an upgrade too?

Yup that's what mine is costing. Give or take for shipping. Going from a 5670 to 5690. I just couldn't justify the 480 for a refurbed part with only a 90 day part/labor warranty. With the upgrade I get a one year warranty. My guess in his case is that there are no 5660 boards left, and has to go to at minimum a 5670.
