Acer TravelMate 8100!!! - Page 6

Ordered mine from www.shopblt.com (Bottom Line Telecommunications) last Friday. That company showed up on Froogle. They said it shipped Friday and I should have it by Tuesday, I guess. They did have 5 of them in stock. Could not order from CDW - too much state tax to pay We'll see how it turns out. I might post a separate review or just chime in jjfcpa's thread. Gotta give away my TM8003 to my sister ;^)

does the american/canadian model of the 8104 have bluetooth?
i looked at the specs it says fast infrared??
I am interested in the 8103 but would purhase an extra 512 of ram from newegg (probably).

Can any of you guys tell me which one. The speed doesnt seem to match. The specs at acer say it comes w/ 512MB (512/0) DDR2 333 SDRAM but I can only find DDR-2 at 400 or 533. Does it make a difference if the specs on the two cards dont exactly match. I assume its a 200 pin right? PC2-2700/3200/4200?

Thanks, and congrats on all thse new buyers. PLEASE keep us posted.

The specs at acer say DDR2 533, that is what you want to get. I don't know why some sites day different things.

The reviews listed above also show ddr2 533.

FWIW, I called Acer Technical Support yesterday and asked what kind of memory the 8100 (specifically the 8104) had and he said that his spec sheet said the same thing as the US website, DDR2 333. As we know, the Global site says DDR2 533. I'm fairly sure that both his sheet and the US site are wrong in the same way and that it's really DDR2 533, but even the Acer tech support guys are confused.

I spoke with a gentlemen name Kevin Brown at CDW he was very polite and worked with me. So far things are going really smooth and I'm ecstatic about getting it. $2,299 is what my total for just the laptop hope it's worth it now when I was so close to buying the 3790 for much more. Kevin said he was supposed to be getting a shipment of them in this morning I'm due to call him back this afternoon.

Keep me updated please i'm seriously tempted to order one of these, this might be 'the one' i've been waiting for.

Sheesh. Well, I hope someone gets a definitive answer. DDR2 333 would be really pathetic, though. If any of the reviews did a memory bench we could tell maybe.

Hmm anyone know exactly which memory these laptop uses?

Quote:
Memory

1GB (512MB installed in each of two memory slots) or 512MB (512MB installed in one of two memory slots) DDR2 333 SDRAM

User upgradeable up to 1GB (one 512MB memory card in each slot)* or 2GB (one 1GB memory card in each slot)* subject to availability of 1GB cards

*If upgrading after initial purchase, one or more of the memory cards provided with the system may have to be replaced with optional larger memory cards in order to achieve the maximum capacity.
It doesn't really say how many pins, is it the 200pins version?

Forgot to mention, that I also ordered the ACER Port Replicator III. I am going to use the ACER 8104 with a Samsung 213T LCD. Just hoping it works as well as my Thinkpad T42 does.
The blurb on the Acer global site mentions a new port replicator, called "ezDock", that is for the new PCI Express laptops (the 8104 being one of those):

Flush with 24 expansion ports and jacks, Acer's PCI Express™ docking solution -- Acer ezDock -- encourages ultra-convenient transformation to desktop computing, and connectivity to a plethora of digital or legacy peripherals. (See 8100 on Acer Global)

I think this is a different item to the EasyPort III that's been around for a while (compatible with the 8000 series and others), but I've not seen a specification for the ezDock. I assume the EasyPort III has the same connector to the laptop.

One thing to note about the EasyPort III is that it doesn't have DVI out , which you might like for a 213T (nice monitor). But the 8104 has it.

Broke down and ordered 8104

So much for going with a CL56, I broke down and ordered 2Ghz 8104 today from cdw. I'm nervous about the odd shaped keyboard and potentially slow ram, but this laptop has almost everything else I'm looking for. I'll update when it arrives.

According to Port Replicator III specification here
it is compatible with up to TM8000 and uses 100-pin port.
At the same time TM8100 utilizes ezDock, which is 124-pin.
I guess you purchased wrong item
