Firstly, I've really enjoyed reading ALL your posts in this rather deservedly long thread in honour of this awesome laptop, BEFORE and AFTER I've got mine. You all have been a great source of info in helping me decide to get a new laptop after months of patience and consideration. Yes, I'm now a proud owner of the Acer Travelmate 8104WLMi !
I was gonna get the Acer Ferrari but circumstances forced me to wait a few months more and boy I'm so glad I did because I'd be cursing myself if I was to miss the Sonoma releases by possibly a few weeks.
Anyway, I've had the 8104Wlmi for about a week now. So far so good (touching wood while saying this !), and busy doing the routine installation and transfering of files from old laptop. There's only one slight problem though and that is the heat generated from the touchpad. It does get reasonably hot but not burning hot. I can cope with that extra heat though. However, the heat spreads quickly to the rest of the metallic palmrest and some users might not like it. But I can't really be fussed to be honest.
I'll post a in-depth review once all installation and configurations to my customized preferences have been done. (Not that anyone needs another review !
Anyway, here's the dilemma facing me at the moment.
I understand that there are 3 partitions in my 80Gb hard disk. C: (ACER) - 35.70Gb, D: (ACERDATA) - 35.87Gb and one hidden partition (PQService) - 2.93Gb. All adds up to only 74.5Gb. So where is the remaining 5.5 Gb ?!?!
All partitions are in FAT32. I would like to keep the C: partition as it is now, ie. ~40Gb FAT32 mainly for programs, software, OS (Windows and Linux). But for the D:, I would like to convert/reformat it to NTFS (40Gb). I will be using D: to store my personal files, movies, games and etc. I would also like to keep the hidden partition (I'm guessing is used to store Acer's own apps eg. eSettings, eManagement, Gridvista etc.).
So is the above partition configuration advisable ?
I found out that D: has these hidden folders - 'MSOCache', 'Recycled' and 'System Volume Information'. Don't really know what they are for. Do I need to back them up BEFORE reformatting/converting D: to NTFS ? And do I need to copy them back into the D: after it has been converted to NTFS ?
Can anyone help or teach me STEP-by-STEP on how to go about to achieve the above settings ? I know partitioning has been mentioned many times in this thread and don't want to be a pain in the ass bringing this topic up again, but I have NO EXPERIENCE WHATOEVER in partitioning and do not want to risk screwing up this otherwise faultless (so far) lappie. So I hope someone can be ever so kind to offer advice and steps on how and what I should do to achieve the partition settings as mentioned above.
I can get the latest version of Norton PartitionMagic, OEM Win XP Pro SP2 and any other programs if required.
Many thanks and kind regards,
