Acer TravelMate 8100!!! - Page 8

Sweet, give us as much information as you possibly can. I was going to buy this on friday too but i was a bit hesitant and now still have to decide. How is the weight btw, that's the one thing holding me back. Do you think it's convenient to carry to the library every so often or should I go under 6lbs?

Oh,

I was also curious about the hard drive. What are the specs on it, size/sped?

Kudos on being the first, but that comes w/ a responsability

Yup. Good horizontal angles, so-so vertical. It's not CrystalBrite from what I see. No dead pixels and it's good on my eyes, so I'm happy.
Lotsa space, hehe.

To other posters. It's not just extra 512MB memory for $100, you gotta throw out existing memory and buy 2x512MB to upgrade lower model. Also, lower model may not have Bluetooth. I don't care much for Bluetooth, but RAM is what driven my choice. I agree that 1.8GHz could be enough and even better in terms of less heat and longer battery. Cheaper too. I think, I could actually tweak it through Acer eManager to always run at 1.8GHz

[Nope, can only change to always run at 800MHz. 1.8GHz is not possible. ]

Need to change my sig

On the repartitioning part, I decided to just backup existing partitions with Acronis, repartition, and restore with resizing on the fly. That will keep all registered/preinstalled products as they are.

P.S. From the User Manual for Fn+F3 button description (exactly as text is wrapped):

OK.......Just ordered the 8104 WLMi from Buy.com!!!!

I gave up on getting a good screen for my Dell i9200 and went for the Acer. I'll get it by Thursday with overnight shipping! I will definitely post my review for everyone. I'm a bit nervous about being a guinea pig here, but I desperately needed something to do my CAD work on for school - not to mention play games on :-)

Again, i'll keep everyone in the loop.

How does it compare to your current laptop viewing angles?
So the hard drive is only offered at 5400 RPM, no 7200 RPM? And will the 16 MB cache make it perform the same as a 7200 RPM with 8 MB cache? Also is the wireless g 54 Mbps or 108?

Actually I dont think so, the specs I've seen all say that the 8103 1x512 ddr2 533 the other slot comes empty so it woulod just be a matter of $80 to upgrade to 1Gb RAM. As I posted ealier today I wanted to know which card it uses to get another at newegg. Can u confirm what the specs on the ram are, maybe even the make.

Some of them probably have and just do not have them listed yet. After all, the list of companies offering them has been expanding daily.

Does this laptop have upgradable graphics, or are you stuck with the X700?

Oh...and how good is the WSXGA+ screen. Does it ghost, shadow, sparkle, ect., or is it an all around gamer/DVD watcher's paradise?

lol...sorry for being too impatient to wait for a full review...

Also, anyone know any more about the Acer ezDock. (photos, being sold, etc.) About all I know is what has been gathered on this post so far.

Well, all the places I checked (including Acer) listed 8103 as having 2x256MB.
If you know vendor that has it with 1x512MB and can buy from them, godspeed to you. In worst case it will be another $80 for you (provided Corsair memory fits/works).

The memory DIMMs in 8104 are DDR2-533 512MB 32Mx16 1.8EP (from label). Each has 8 Elpida chips (4 on each side). Neither Everest nor Sandra show manufacturer or particular model (SPD info also shows non-ECC, Unbuffered, Synchronous).

HD is ST9100823A, Seagate site says that this 5400 Momentus has 8MB buffer. Drive is cool. So far never went above 38 Celsius. Fast enough for me, absolutely not going to put 7200rpm there.

DarthAcer you have any pics? better then the review sites?

I am looking to buy a new laptop it's either this one, going for 2799.99 (which i find strange because the 8006 is going for more Canadian funds )

Don't have them pictures yet - no time for that. Besides, already mentioned review http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/...100/index.html has nice pictures (clicky on them to get bigger ones). And published dimensions (363 (W) X 265.7 (D) X 30.5-34.3 (H) mm ) are probably what they are.
It's about an inch wider than TM8003 but TM8003 is 1/2 inch deeper from my visual observation (no scientific measurements were made

Hey DarthAcer, does this baby look exactly the same as in this review, including the color?
How comfortable do you think the weight is to carry around like to the library? And does anyone know what the official specs are supposed to be becuase i thot it wud have the 18mb buffer.
The 8103 have a 80GB 5400 RPM 16MB buffer (Toshiba)
and the 8104 have a 100 GB 5400 RPM 8MB buffer (seagate?)

does it kill battery life that much?

IIRC tomshardware 7200 review says that it doesn't affect battery life at all. (But the biggest is 60GB.)

It's not about battery, it's about not getting hot surface under your palm and also not bothering with any upgrades, data movement, drive cloning, etc. One thing is sure: Momentus is running cooler than 7200rpm Hitachi.

Lei: it does look exactly the same, that's one of the reasons I'm not bothering with pictures.

Collegekid: should be comfortable. Folded, I can handle/carry it with one hand. Since it's a bit wider than regular laptops, you should check bag/backpack size to see if it fits. It's a bit tight in my Targus backpack if I put it into a dedicated section. I might just think of some sort of pocket and then put it in general section. The specs says it's 2.86kg (sorry for units, got it from Singapore site and don't have US manual in front of me).

P.S. It refused to read my 1GB MemoryStick Pro (using it in Clie PDA). Don't know the reason yet, 5-in-1 reader should be able to do it. I put the stick into USB reader and it worked fine. Perhaps needs an updated driver or something like that
