My old computer (an Acer 804) had the same feature which worked perfectly. My 8103 does not switch between displays whether I utilize an analog or a DVI connection.

Has anyone else had these issues and found solutions?
I do it all the time on Analog using the 2405 as the DVI is hooked up to my desktop so my 8104 is connected via analog.

I have called Acer tech support, and the guy had me reinstall the driver from the "system" CD. He said there is not a new driver file (I got my 8104 at the beginning of March). It is still doing the same thing multiple times a day.

Anyone know how to correct this? HELP!

Thanks.

Hi B7. I'm not the expert but here are some suggestions:
1. If you've recently installed some software that might be conflicting, consider uninstalling it or falling back to a previous System Restore.

2. Thoroughly uninstall the graphics drivers , trying all of the following methods, before reinstalling from the system CD:
a. Download the ATI Catalyst driver uninstaller from: https://support.ati.com/ics/support/...ge&folderID=27
b. Reboot to Safe Mode (F8 during DOS boot portion, "Normal" safe mode with or without network.
c. From Control Panel Add\Remove Programs uninstall any ATI Control Panel and ATI Driver options that may be there (I don't have the stock config anymore to know what's there).
d. From Device Manager, Display Adapters, Radeon Mobility X700 do a right-click and select Uninstall and do that.
e. Finally, run the Cat-uninstaller from item a.
f. Reboot to Safe Mode again.
g. Ignore and\or cancel any windows advising "new device found" and "do you want to install drivers".
h. Install the ATI drivers from your Acer system CD.
i. Reboot to regular mode.

If that doesn't help, research item 1 again. Good luck!

If that doesn't work ask DarthAcer. I'm sure he'll know the proper steps. There are driver step-by-steps in the forums here but they're so huge anymore it's hard to find anything.

Hello there!

I'm seriously tempted by this magic machine as my next computer... The only thing that concerns me is the speed of the hard drive, as i'd like to do some low-level video editing on it (Mini-DV footage, just bits of holiday footage, a few effects - nothing major). I've got a 4 year old Athlon 1400 desktop system at the moment which handles everything i do perfectly well, but it has an old 7200rpm HDD in it (P-ATA, not S-ATA).

Can anyone tell me if i'm going to have any problems with this, considering the drive in the 8104WLMi that i'm looking at is 5400rpm? Anyone had any experience with video editing using this machine at all?

Many thanks in advance!

^you could always get a 7200rpm drive to replace the 5400rpm drive..

there is very little performance gain between a 7200rpm 60GB and a 5400rpm 100GB as the higher ariel density of the 100GB partly makes up for the speed difference.

Looks like this is the lappy for me, then! Hehe, cheers.

The 8104 also has a PATA drive, the only slowdows you will get is doing serious editing while trying to burn CD's/DVD's since the HDD and CD/DVD share the same channel.

Actually they don't. HDD is master on Primary channel, CD/DVD is master on Secondary channel.

i've ordered the 8104 and was thinking of taking out the extended warranty.

i've found this:

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=66436

is this the same warranty as the one sold on acers website? shown here:

http://www.aceradvantage.com/advanta...roupCtxParam=0

??

cuz its only ~£50 odd pounds-and definatly worth the free pick ups etc. and 30%off batteries etc..

There are pc show currently going on singapore right now. I went there and go to the acer booth. I tested tm8104, and indeed it's a great lappy, not to mention looks gorgeous too. However, the sound volume is so tiny, which justified what I've heard bout this lappy. A bit sad for such a high end laptop. Really made me re-consider again in buying this...

OMG this thread is gigatic....it took me 2 hours to read through it.

Yeah its unbelievably huge. It's worth it though, it pretty much tells the story of the 8100 since release. It's had its problems, but at the end of the day it's a pretty fantastic machine. And I love mine.

Since February, have the drivers/firmware matured much? Hopefully this 8100 platform is stable now and the heating constanting restarting problems, screen flickering problems are gone?
no more people are reporting such errors...I think its safe now

Just got my 8103 and dropped in 2 gigs ram. Seems very good so far..nice build. The lid of mine seemed a bit dirty and I thought it might have a plastic film on it, but I guess not. Newegg rocks..$2000 for 2 gigs transcend ram and 8103 shipped overnight. Awesome.
Can't wait to load bf2.

Anyone modded their case yet or ordered the Ferrari case?

I tried ordering the ferrari case as a spare part from the Acer Pan America phone number but they said that the new Ferrari 4000 is so new that they dont even have spare parts for that yet.

Just ordered my 8104 yesterday..man I am crazy to give it a spin..

I suppose I'll spend a lot of time around here now checking all the tips and tricks to make the most out of it (starting with the NTFS conversion, I suppose)
