Acer TravelMate 8100!!! - Page 11

I do prefer the glossy type screen as compared to the non glossy. And again, does the acer 8100 series have the glossy screen?

No.

DarthAcer - would you mind running 3DMark05 at 1280x1024 for comparison purposes?
Nope. Only Pro version of 3DMark05 allows to change settings, and I'm not going to buy one just for this test

Bluetooth is Broadcom BCM2035 = 1.1 and 1.2 specifications.

aw only bluetooth 1.2 =(

2.0 is supposed to already become available in Q1 of 2005.

I think I'll buy Acer just to get disappointed in the screen and return it for Fujitsu or Sony XBrite

Finally make up my mind that I want one of these babies and they're backordered everywhere. Serves me right for being wishy-washy, I suppose.

That's weird. I've been searching the PC Mall site and can no longer find the ACER 8100. I ordered one from them yesterday and it is intransit right now. And now, I can't find it on their site any more???

Item # is 02964900

I called PC Mall a couple of hours ago and they told me they won't have more in until the 2nd week of February. It's possible they took the item off the site since it's backordered so long.

Nope, it's still there, just hiding:

Very strange... they changed the part # but everything else is the same. Glad I got mine while they were available. Should show up tomorrow afternoon.

Hows the heat on this system? And what about battery life?

Looks like the model isn't yet available in the UK, it's not listed on the Acer UK site yet. Was just about set on the TM8006LMi as well!!
I've not seen anyone selling it in the UK either (yet). But Acer UK had it listed on their site today (see tech spec page here)

I'd like to see the User Guide and Service Guide, but none of the Acer support sites I've been to have them (yet). Anyone spotted these anywhere?

What concerns heating – the air vents on the self side expel rather hot air, and the hard disk under your right palm is warm.

TravelMate 8100. If take the results of this model separately, three hours and a half of battery life

One option for those who like the glossy screens is to put on a NuShield protector. When I use one on my TM 8004 screen I percieve a noticable increase in screen quality. It does nothing for the terrible viewing angles, but the colors in general are less washed out when looking at it at the perfect angle.

I will say this... the 8100 is by far and away the best of the Sonoma laptops thus far. With a video card that powerful, I don't think that lack of upgradability is going to be an issue. Expresscard would've been nice, but considering there aren't really any Expresscards to use, its not a big deal either. Lack of SATA sucks though...

Very sexy looking machine though. If Acer adds SATA support to future revisions, then they will most likely have a customer in me.

We definitely need a user review and pics for this. It's hot stuff.

SATA still isn't a big deal, imho. It offers NCQ, but that slows down most workstation applications, it only really helps in server situations. Even the new 100MB Seagate Momentus 7200RPM will be in both SATA and Ultra ATA. Now, I'd love SATA just for future proofing, though.

But, if you have 6 months to wait, I bet we see Sonoma platform laptops with video at least as good, plus Expresscards and SATA. Right now this is the only non-heavy laptop that is good though, of the new ones.

For those ordering from CDW after placing my order Sunday I was just informed via e-mail that my ETA was the 28th and I'm supposedly 3rd on the list there. I'm definitely not going to hold my breath though because I'm sure they'll end up putting some CDW executive in front of me lol!

Here in Sweden we have to wait until February-March for the 8100-series according to Acer Sweden. Just typical that once you've finally decided on a notebook you have to wait tooooo looooong ).

Any more reviews than Hardwarezone and Digit-life?
