Acer TravelMate 8100!!! - Page 18

thank you, i will try the older omegas when i get home.
Whats a good score for these benchmarks? I want to test mine out but I have no idea what the numbers indicate or the range for certain cards.
just try it out and post it here. Also on futuremark it will let you compare to everyone else who have run the benchmark.

off hand i think that the ferraris's were getting like 4000 on 3dmark03, snorre used to have it in his sig but he changed it.

My delimna is that I want to watch movies on both my notebook(soon to be 8104 I hope) and desktop. My desktop has an Nvidia nForce2 soundstorm mobo with SPDIF and it has a control panel for bass management. If the 8104 has the same then I will only buy an external decoder and hook my speakers up to it with the SPDIF running into the decoder for both my notebook and desktop. If no bass management with the Intel HD audio, then I probably look at the Audigy ZS notebook and use their software with the proper speaker setup and control.
The HD Audio in TM8104 is actually Realtek 880d. SPDIF out is on the same output as headphones. Control panel for it (soundman.exe) allows you to choose speakers configuration, the choices are Headfones, 2CH speaker, Dolby Digital 5.1, and Dolby Digital PCM. No bass management. Very simplistic. If you want flexibility, I recommend Audigy 2 ZS Notebook wholeheartedly. I use that on TM8003 and it rocks!

im thinking about getting the audigy 2zs also. i heard it was really good

Thanks for giving us all the information .

Do you think it's worth paying $300,00 to get the 8104 instead of the 8103 (slightly faster processor and 1GB instead of 512MB of ram) ?

I'm really thinking about buying this notebook... It's almost perfect .

Tell me something: isn't it hard to read at such a high resolution as 1680x1050 ?
That's the only thing I'm worried about now. I was worried about ghosting but you already cleared that up .

Thanks and have fun .
Well. The extra 512MB of DD2 is worth about $120+ so it's $180 for the faster CPU. Only you can determine if that is worth it.

As for the 1680x1050. It's similar to 1600x1200 on a 15" screen if you can get ahold of one to look at. It is pretty small. I can read it fine at normal reading distance but I currently have my 2025 about 3 feet away from me at my office since I also have a Mac and a PC desktop. I can read everything at that distance on the 2025 (1280x800) but it became difficult with the 1680x1050. I may have to rearrange my desktops when I get the 8100.

OK heres my big post / semi review...

Il start off with the pix then discuss more after.

Heres my benchmark, overclocking results. I cant publish 3dmark scores with this thing, i guess its 2 new to be recognized by futuremarks site. So heres some screenshots for proof.

Stock vid card clocks are - 360core/300mem
these scores were obtained using 420/365

as u can see there is LOTS of room to overclock this X700. I believe that they downclocked it alot to retain a good battery life rating. This is not the max OC of my X700. This is just where im leaving off for tonight. After i find the max of my X700, i will move on to overclocking the CPU and RAM.

Here you go...

Can someone tell me if there is a space on top of the keyboard and below the screen. The pictures on this tread on page 24 seems like there is a rectangular hole on the middle of the comp. Can someone explain this?
thats where the battery goes.
hey amd is good for me. what version drivers are you running and what did you do to oc it?
This is a nice laptop! Can someone post their experiences with battery life? I think if it can get 3.5+ hrs then it's a clear winner for me! Also what about heat and fan noise?

Cheers

I didnt' notice anyone posting about battery life yet... but as for heat and fan noise I'll sum it up for you:

Heat:
There is a vent on the side that blows *warm* air.
The touchpad gets *warm* and for at least one person *uncomfortable*, but the concensus is that it is *not too hot*.
The bottom of the laptop gets a little warm but nobody described it as uncomfortable.

Noise:
The fan comes on at bootup but it is quiet.
Under light loads the fan may come on but it is quiet enough that any external noise (phone ring, television, music, etc...) will make the fan noise dissappear.
Under a heavy load the fan noise is *slightly* louder but not irritating.
i wont be able to report battery life untill my briefcase arrives. i wont take it with me to work until i have that.

my observations of heat...

The fan isnt loud at all, but keep in mind that this is my first notebook and i do not live in a silent environment.

The air coming out of the left exhaust vent can get very hot, im using it plugged in and im benchmarking so it might be way cooler when using battery and running on "power save" mode just browsing the web, etc. However that is great news in my opinion. That means the internal cooling solution works extremely well.

Also there is only 1 hot spot on the notebook. Undearneath of the spacebar area. The left palm rest is always cool, the right palm rest gets luke warm at best in my experience so far.

I have installed the next to latest omega drivers. And i use ATItool to overclock. Pretty nice results so far IMO.

AC adapter seems pretty small, especially for a laptop like this. How heavy and/or convenient is it? Mine's at home and I won't be able to see it till saturday. Just a little over anxious I guess.

BTW did you do a clean install of windows and stuff?
can someone do some sisoft sandra cpu and memory and multimedia with this 8104 laptop?

How is the built in wireless signal strength? Has anyone taken a picture with the complete package as it arrives? I'm guessing it doesn't come with a carrying case judging from AMDisgood4me's last post.
Nice AMDisgood4me! A NY company called me at 6 this morning (Colo.) with a "tentative" in-stock. If it's confirmed I'll have one middle of next week, otherwise it's cancel, I'm not backordering. Yours looks sweet.

I'm sure you mean that's a GOOD thing. I've had bricks that are BRICKS. Nice to see a more portable adapter for a change.
