Acer TravelMate 8100!!! - Page 33

Lappy Typos

I mistype a LOT on laptops from any vendor simply due to the fact that the keys are different, the layouts are always different, and the sizes/pitch are always different.

Then again, I am in living hell having to use SUN, IBM, HP (workstation), apple and a myriad of laptop keyboards as well as my MS curved ergo keyboard at home.

I wish someone would release and enforce an IEEE keyboard standard, lol, so that they would all works the same way.

Ok guys I think I will be buying one of the 8104, but where? Who has them available? Who will have them available within the next week? Ofcoarse I am a little torn though still, when I first set out to buy a new laptop one of my main features I was looking for was a 17" screen, but I came across this thread and things got confusing. Otherwise the 8104 has everything else, the processor/chipset, videocard, weight. Does any one have any thoughts? What's a good 17" (preferably wuxga) with an x700 or better video card? Thanks in advance.

Hello jobodaho;

I am quite positive that no one has them available and will have in the next week or so. It is supposed to arrive in the first week of March, but it can come sooner but I wouldn't rely on it. There is I think, more chance it will come later then the first week of march then sooner.

Best thing you can do is pre-order it so you will get it sooner.

The stores that sells the computer are f.x.

www.shopblt.com
www.cdw.com
www.pcmall.com

And I think there isn't any 17" notebook with better videocard then x700, x700 is the best video card available in notebooks now I believe, but im not quite sure. And you know if you get a 17" inch monitor then it wont be as comfortable travelling with it.

This thing with 8104 is terrible for me. I live in Iceland but im travelling to Washington in late february for only a couple of days. And there is only about 30% chance I will get it while im there. And the sadder thing is, I will have to wait a month are so to finally get it AND have to pay $1200 more for it. But hopefully will I get the computer while I will be staying in Washington D.C.

Noway I will try to find another notebook, been searching for the right notebook for a month or so. And finally when I find the right notebook. Nobody has it, or probably will have it while I will be staying in the USA

Well most, if not all, are that lucky that you will get it. Only chance for me having it is between 24-28. February, or else I'll have to wait a month longer and pay $1200 more for it.

Wish I lived in the states, all computer related, or basically everything is 15-50% cheaper there then here in Iceland where I live. Very expensive country

But hopefully the luck will be with me for once and Acer 8104 will get shipped before the first week of march :S

8104 on EBUYER (UK site) (Sometimes(?) their search doesn't include out-of-stock items - you have to tell it to include them.)

It's been there since middle of last week, along with 8101 and 8103. Price is £1250 + VAT, so not as good as the other sites mentioned. Wrong pics (looks like a Ferrari), just like lots of other sites. Last week they were saying out of stock (*7 days), but just now it says out of stock (*8 days).

As to whether the memory on the 8103 is 1 or 2 sticks - that's up to Acer. The Acer part number for the 8104wlmi is different for different regions and they're allowed to have different spec for different regions. (I think they did it with the 8000 series - some Asian regions got 5200 RPM drives, whilst other regions got 4200RPM drives). Hope it's only 1 stick though.

I ordered my TM 8104 on Feb. 4th from PC Mall, and they SAY I'll get it this Friday, the 18th. I am SO hoping they are accurate!! Anyone have much experience buying from them? I ordered it by phone.

Also, I am a newbie at this site, so this may sound dumb... but... how do you all get those VERY cool moving smileys??

Thanks.

I also ordered an 8104 from Bytewize. Supposed to ship out on Monday the 14th, and get here a few days later. I'm only 200 miles from them (across Lake Ontario) but it'll take a bit to get here. Hope it gets here soon!

I noticed there are different types of the Acer TravelMate 8104.. Something called Sonoma and other thing called Banias, what is the difference between them? Is this another word for the different types of Pentium processors or?
Banias and Sonoma are not comparable.

Banias and Dothan are comparable. Both are Pentium M processors .. their main difference is Dothan has a 2MB L2 cache, Banias has 1MB.
(Banias was manufactured on 130nm manufacturing process. Dothan was built using on the 90nm process.)

Acer 8104 is a Sonoma notebook . Sonoma is the mobile platform .. Basically a Centrino version 2. It incorporates a Dothan processor, Alviso chipset (mobile 915 Express chipset family supporting 533Mhz FSB, DDR2 RAM, PCI express, Serial ATA, Hidef Audio and other goodies), and updated wireless LAN.

I bought my 8103 from http://www.academicsuperstore.com . They do seem to have some in stock, as it doesn't say anything to the contrary.

Does anyone know where I can pick up the extra 512 MB DDR2 SODIMM?
do you think the acer 8100 series is a better buy than the dell 9200?
