I ordered the 8103 from pcnation on the 2nd of february, it shipped on the 5th, had some mix ups with fedex, and had to go down to the terminal and pick it up today. First impressions...seems to be everything the 8104 is, with slightly more battery life. I read an article in pc magazine this month that an acer model lost an hour of batter life from windows xp sp1 to sp2... maybe this laptop could have even better battery life?

edit: and I got it cheaper than you did from cdw

I can I agree that I was a little cryptic there. Let's see if I can straighten it up. As I said I've been following this tread for some time. Just a little while ago you wrote that cdw had received 18 units of the 8104 and that you would be receiving it any day. Since my sales rep, Kevin, had told me that I was towards the top of the list I figured that I would be receiving mine pretty soon as well. So immediately after I had read your post I wrote to my sales rep and asked him if this were true. He however simply said that they were still looking at the 28th and did not acknowledge that they had gotten any units in at all. That and my order status still say "backordered". so I don't know what's going on but I hope it's just my sales rep that's not fully up to date and that I soon will be having an 8104.

Sorry about that, now I see what you meant. Last Friday I'd looked on here just catch up on the thread and that's when I had seen that someone had posted that CDW had gotten 18 laptops in. I anxiously called and (still somewhat skeptically) confirmed it and low and behold it was true. Back when I placed my order (on the 24th) I was told I was 3rd in line. If I were you I'd call and ask where you fall, It might give you a piece of mind, after all I know how anxious you are! Also try talking to a different rep, someone other than the one that originally took your call. They might have the answer you're looking for.

NEWEGG HAS THE 8104 IN STOCK AS OF 10:30PM EST!

I just ordered mine and if all goes well it'll be here on Wednesday via overnight shipping!

I was supposed to get one from CDW - I was #16 last Friday and they received 18- but today my Rep. said I was #1 on the new list. hmmm
Just ordered from Newegg with the same shipping as you so let's hope for the best.

You have no idea how hard i've been trying to track down one of these! I broke down and ordered one from Bytewize computers in Canada because I wanted one so bad! Now I have to call them tomorrow AM after work and before school to cancel my pre-order. I'll be saving ~$50 by ordering it from Newegg, so I will be $50 less poor this semester. Actually, I wouldn't be poor at all if I didn't spend my money on a laptop for school... School makes you poor! Hopefully the world will be in need of one more Electrical/Electronics Engineer in a year or so, because i'll need a good paying job to pay for my student loans and this laptop!

Just bought mine from newegg. Thanks for the info alexrud!

After placing my order I went back to the newegg acer 8104 page and it said in stock: no. I hope I was lucky and got the last one and not unlucky where someone else bought it right before me

With rushed order + overnight shipping it was still ~$50 cheaper than cdw.

Thanks, but I was too slow! I was ordering it online at Newegg. They said there was 1 in stock at their website (phone support was "closed" for the day). By the time I entered all of the info, there was not 1 left!!

I am SO frustrated!! It is amazing that it is SO difficult to buy something like this!

Thanks for the info, anyway. I'll be quicker next time.

PhatChap: I hope we both got our's. I placed my order at 7:53:57 (their time) with the exact "rush + next day Fed Ex.

Hope to cancel my PCNation order in the morning (#7 in their cue)

I checked repeatedly myself to see how long it would say "in stock" on Newegg's site. As far as I can tell, it was in stock for over an hour after I ordered mine - roughly 7:10PM PST. We'll see tomorrow if everything is OK.

Well, I missed the last few at NewEgg, but found and ordered one from PC Connection that SAYS it will deliver in 3 to 5 days. Better than 2+ weeks, anyway.

I can't believe there was one left when I started typing in all my info, and when I clicked "submit," there wasn't one left! No fair! I have to wait 4 to 6 days now instead of getting it by Wednesday.

Well, it's a great package and one of the first out of the gate. If you can't see that from the specs, you're obviously not in the market for this type of machine.

Name another machine of this size and weight with an X700, 100GB drive and DVI...

I'll save you the trouble...there aren't any.
