Acer TravelMate 8100!!! - Page 36

Belinda7,

Sorry to burst your bubble, but PC Connection told me on the phone yesterday that it would really be March 1 before they got more. And it was saying 3-5 days on the web site then too.

I ordered the 8104 from them anyway. I've been waiting 2 years for a Centrino notebook, I can wait 2 weeks.

Ghosting with Ghost 9.0

I was wondering if anyone has been able to get the newest Ghost 9.0 (cd support) to work on the Acer 8104? I realize that Acer ships a "ghost restore" cd but it is created using an older version of Ghost (thus Fat32 vs NTFS).

I have been unable to get the 9.0 version to work on the Phillips DVD drive that came with my new dell desktop so I'm wondering if the Acer drive is supported.

Once the 8104 arrives & after loading all my day to day software I want to make a new ghost.

they should be more available in early march, looks like distributors are starting to get some in soon.

Can you point us to a better/faster machine that you can buy -now-, that isn't a desktop replacement laptop?

Haven't tried any Ghosting, but the FAT32 is one of my peeves with this machine. It IS using 32K clusters, no NTFS permissions support, and I've already had Chkdsk run several times on reboot. Not a show stopper but definitely archaic. Hope Acer upgrades their own in-house ghost util one of these days. We've used various versions of Ghost successfully here at work. Basically a great imager. I've read that Acronix (sp?) is good also, and free?

The restore image for TM8104 is definitely _not_ created with old Ghost. If you check the restore partition name, it starts with PQ which immediately brigns to mind Powerquest (remember PartitionMagic ?). Symantec acquired them recently and the newest Ghost (9.0) is based on PQ technology. Previous one is not. I upgraded my Ghost 8 to version 9 and so far I don't like it. Sure, it does most of the backup stuff from within Windows. But I could care less since previous Ghost, even doing it from DOS, could work with NTFS, USB/Firewire drives, etc. I had trouble of not being able to do disk-to-disk cloning with new Ghost - no such operation choice. Previous version did it wonderfully. I'll give Symantec some time to fix that and will see what happens.

I read Maxian 7's post, called RandomSource.com, ordered one, and will have it tomorrow! They charge a lot for overnight shipping ($123.80) from Florida- especially since I am IN Florida, AND have to now pay tax, but I will have it tomorrow!!

I canceled my order for the one from PCNation, and they were very nice about it-no problem.

Good luck with your order.

I can't wait! 8104 tomorrow!

Wish I lived in the states, so I just could call them up, order, cancel my order and get it somewhere where they have it in stock.. I have sent about 20 emails to every single store that sells the Acer 8104, not one of them could get me the Acer 8104 between 24-28. February. Find that a bit strange since alot of people here are recieving there laptops before that time.

Must hate foreigners :/

How about this for amusing.

Found the 8104 for sale in Germany (live in Sweden, eta here about a month%¤#"%¤"!#)

Pricetag: 3185 euro!??!

Man, thats a shitload of cash, + shipping......
A quick scout around some of the UK online resellers (ebuyer, shopacer, ...) suggests they'll be available in a week or so, so maybe there'll be more choice than just Germany (and silly prices).

I just got my 8104 from CDW!!!

It's absolutely brilliant! I can finally breath a sigh of relief and to those waiting I can honestly say the wait was worth it. It's very snappy and responds really fast. Boot up (after initial setup) was reasonably fast despite the 5400 rpm hdd. I've yet to install any games in the short time that I've had it but I'll post a decent review when I have more time.

Good luck to all those waiting for it you WILL NOT be dissapointed
