Acer TravelMate 8100!!! - Page 38

well the model with 1024 mb ram, 80gb hd, x600 (yea...) and dvd burner comes to $2299 (called and inquired) but the thing is they're not really customizable yet...i figure that wont happen for another month or so

i just prefer the way the nc8200 looks and the keyboard and the battery life over the 8100 (which are kind of unchangeable factors) and i was curious how the graphics card would carry over...

all i really play is HL2 and some madden, but i got an ati 9600 that handles madden so i kno an x600 will, my hl2 runs at low specs on the 9600 tho

As the resolution is very high, text is probably small and also it'll be difficult to play games at the native resolution with a reasonable framerate (this is what I think, without seeing one personally).

How bad is the image if you use a lower resolution (let's say something near 1280 or 1024 pixels) ?

Can anyone take pictures of "non-native" resolutions (windows/text and/or gaming) ?

Thanks a lot!!
Don't have any non-native's at the moment.

HL2 DM_POWCAMP at 1680x1050 16:10 game aspect and unknown but excellent framerate

Wow this is quite new to me.. Are you saying that in resolutions like 800x600 the image gets weaker and your fps drops? Isn't supposed to be the other way around, the lower resolution, the better fps?

You may want to quote whoever you are replying to. Posts don't always come in right after the one you thought you were answering.

I'm not saying "in resolutions like 800x600 the image gets weaker and your fps drops". Perhaps the other person implied that. I'm not a graphics person but I think you're right, lower res "should" give better fps. That's why weaker graphics cards have to game at lower res. You can game well but don't get the eye candy a more powerful card at a higher res and still-decent fps will get.

Game image usually scale well on LCDs. I use a 20" (1600x1200) at home and even games that does not support such high res look fine and on some games that support the 16x12 I would run at lower res just to get better FPS (HL2) and they looks perfectly fine. Every once in a while you see pixelate text but the graphics are fine.

Patience my friend, patience
OMG, I biffed completely. My email address is of course gfr33m4n@hotmail.com much the same as my username here. Sorry about that. Anyway, I did call cdw and after a little back and forth he finally admitted that they had indeed gotten an early shipment but that they were short 2 units for me to get one. Needless to say I’m now number 2 on the list for the next batch but I guess I have to wait for that. Thx anyway. Actually, if it is all the same to you I wouldn’t mind seeing that picture so I know what I have to look forward too. Thanks again and sorry about the typo.

It looks fine here as well. However, if you have the game side by side...native and not...the disparity is pretty evident. More often than not you won't so this is a non-issue. Evertyhing will be a bit fuzzy but depending on the LCD, this occurs to varying degree. I know the Dell 2001fp that I own is heralded as having one of the better resolution scaling.

Ah, sorry about that MrMsyvc.. But one more question for the 8103 / 8104 owners. In games, are there any ghosting/lag in the screen?

And what do you think the biggest flaws on the computer are?
Hey guys! I'm looking at purchasing the 8103 or the 8104 but the 8103 is more in my price range. Do you think there will be a big drop off in performance between the two? Thanks

Sure thing the only problem is I left the CDW boxes where I work but I can still post the pics. If you give me a day I can probabably swing the box pic. Wait, I have an idea...I have the cdw invoice maybe I can post that by the laptop.

Thanks alexrud!

Just wanted to also thank you for last nights post on the "in stock" at new egg.com...Yes I got my 8104 (waiting for the Fed Ex tracking # for delivery tomorrow)

FYI: if you are shipping to a different address than your billing address Be Ware: even though I have both addresses listed and purchase and ship all year long and have BOTH addresses listed with my credit card company they still said that I didn't. After about 20 minutes of being polite and unwilling to hang up and give in did I get through to the right person and all was verified.

Thanks again to alexrud!

Actually, it was IceMage, a user that has a total of 3 posts that signaled me about Newegg having the 8104. This thread contains his post:

http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=61270

He made a post in a small thread; all I did was post it in THE Acer 8100 thread where everyone else would see it. if it weren't for him, some other schmucks would be getting their 8104's tomorrow and not us. I can't wait!

About the only thing you can wish for on this laptop is the 100GB 7200 drive and a longer battery life (like the Aspire 2025). But otherwise it has pretty much everything under the sun built-in.

Well, thanks for the repost. If you had not reposted i would have spent another 180 bucks to get my 8104 from ByteWize, and would have had to wait until next week. Now my 8104 from newegg will be here tomorrow.

I did have the same problem as golfkwesi in that newegg could not confirm my address for some reason. They sent me an email saying everything was confirmed, but i called anyway. When i called i was told i had to call back from the same phonenumber that i listed when i ordered. After about 15 minutes on hold i finally got the situation resolved. If i had not called, some other lucky person would be getting my 8104.

Anyone using Norton as there default Virus/firewall protection?
I'm trying to install the copy that came with my 8104 but can't find it. Also can anyone recommend a fan program to help keep things cool?

No ghosting or lag so far. Biggest "concern" is the warm to hot touchpad. Doesn't bother the hand rests and not too hot to use pad, but something under there is generating some heat. Either the cpu or the graphics chip most likely. Running Mobility Meter the cpu and hdd temps are reasonable (48-52C cpu, 60-70 when gaming, 39-42C hdd) and I use a laptop cooler when doing lengthy gaming.

Agreed the touchpad gets a little warm and you can definitely feel the heat radiating from the keyboard. There are tons of apps running in background guess I'll have to msconfig em'.
I'm still looking for a freeware fan control app if anyone has any links. The best I can connect at to my wireless router is around 50mb per sec not sure if this can be changed. I know my router is capable of 108 and my desktop proves it.
There isn't any ghosting from what I can tell and to me the screen is super bright depending on what you are watching of course. It made me squint at times just to give you an idea of brightness. Seems to run cooler to me on battery mode but I haven't played games on battery mode yet. So far I'm very pleased me and my wife have been fighting over it all night. It's definately a conversation piece.

which router are you using? ur using one of those that support the 108mbps?
I dont think u'll get it from the acer wireless since it only offers up to Gspeed which is 54Mbps, and doens't offer that extreme speed to 108 like some dlink routers and wireless cards
