Forgive me in advance for not being "plug savvy", but would anybody have a suggestion as to the best way one can watch a movies using the 8104 DVD player through a television?

I hear you, but you got to learn to control your use of emoticons!

I had one of those new Sony FS550s but I had to return it last week because battery life was atrocious and I couldn't hack its lo-res screen. Wish I had spotted this thread before I wasted so much time at Best Buy and installing software.

Does the 8104 burn Dual layer -R, or just +R?
If only +R, do you think a firmware update would be available later to allow it to burn -R as well?

If I sound like I don't know what I'm talking about, it's because I've never burned a DVD before. But I want my potential new computer to be as compatible as possible!

Thanks for the idea, but it did not correct the problem.

Bummer. If I right-click on the desktop and select Arrange Icons By I have Auto Arrange, Align to Grid, Show Desktop Icons, and Lock Web Items on Desktop all checked. You might Google a bit, I'm sure this can be fixed.

Thanks for the info, MrMsyvc. Looks like it's not DVD-R DL compatible. But do you think a firmware update might fix such a thing at some point in the future, or should I wait for another drive or computer to become available?

My guess is that having Auto Arrange checked is why it works for you...all icons go to left side. I like to keep certain groups across the screen though!

Dunno about firmware. I sent pix of the drive-side to someone who responded with this:
"I just wanted to make sure that the Panasonic Super Multi drives all kept the same layout which it does. This allows for easy upgrading since the bezel frontplate comes off easily and can be swapped with a new model, etc."

This "implies" that you may be able to replace the drive with another at some time, again it's a guess on my part.

Touchpad Scrolling in Firefox/Thunderbird

Had a problem with the stock touchpad drivers on my 8104, where the scroll button wouldn't work in either Firefox or Thunderbird (1.0 in both cases).

A quick search showed that reverting to an older version of the drivers could fix this. First attempt failed, as the button wasn't supported at all, but second (Acer specific) attempt succeeded.

I'm now using the Synaptics Version 7.5.4 drivers, which I downloaded from the TM 8000 drivers section of http://global.acer.com/support/index.htm (I went to the Europe area). Need to uninstall the default version first and reboot.

While doing this I also discovered that as well as the button, you can scroll by using the right and bottom edges of the touchpad.

HTH someone.

Run it in a window that is regular size (720 x 480). If the graininess still occurs, it is your laptop and not the stretching. It could either be the screen, video card, or drivers if it is your laptop.

If it is the resize you might want to look up a program called FFDShow that helps out with that.

Does this mean I should see an improvement if I playback in non-widescreen mode? I have tried this and doesn't seem to make any difference.

FYI when I installed my Microsoft Wireless (via USB transmitter) Keyboard and Mouse, it insisted on uninstalling my Synaptics, so the pad still worked but not the scroll button. I later reinstalled the provided Synaptics and everything works fine. Fun with drivers.

Unable to backup data to RW cd?

Has anyone had this problem? When I try to format it the default is ISO or Universal something. I never had these options with my old Inspiron 8200.

After the full format process is complete, I verified thru the properties that the disk was available. But then when I set the E:/ for the backup file it says not valid and then says the disk isn't recognizable?

PS: I had no problem with burning a Ghost image to DVD!

Spoke to tech support re: first boot / burn erecovery

FYI: as others have stated it is another image copy to what we received from Acer. For those waiting to take delivery:

Acer said they are going to stop shipping their burned image soon!

So what are you saying? We get nothing or they are going to include the actual OS disk?

When you first boot your new system the eRecovery software will ask you to burn a backup image of the C:/. It will tell you that you'll need either 3 cd's or 1 dvd. This is a full restore image that Acer uses Norton Ghost 8.0 to burn from a hidden partition. My system shipped with these Ghost cd's even though we are prompted to do the above (consider it a 2nd bit of insurance)!

When I asked tech why: they said because they are not always going to ship the burned cds with the system in the future (didn't know when they would stop them) and so you will need to definitely burn an image for an easy restore if you encounter major problems.
