Acer TravelMate 8100!!! - Page 50

Well, I was waiting for the Clevo M400A to come out as it has an upgradeable graphics card, but I've recently out that the ATI Radeon X800 wont even fit in the slot. Tell me what the heck is it supposed to be upgradeable to? The 8104 is way slick looking, and I'll probably just go with that. *sigh*

I probally would have went with the clevo as well untill I relised that it doesn't have widescreen. And that is one of the few things I need in a laptop.

From the PC Mag review it sure looks like a performance contender, for an extra 2 LBs weight and another $1,000! When are manufacturers going to stop putting 4200RPM HDD in performance machines? Puh-leeeze.

I just configged a xpsGen2, in the end, it's $697 more than the acer, when factoring in moving to 2G ram, and extended service ($199 for the acer). This is a tight race!

Here's what I get:
Dell: 3445.00 (ouch)
(includes moving to 2G ram, allowance for ebaying 2 256M modules, purchase of 4 year at home svc)
Est Deliv, mid april

Sager 9860: $3290.00
(3.6 660 series, 7200RPM 60G, 2G Ram, 3 year warrentech)
Est Deliv: Mid March

Acer 8104: $2748.00 (base $2299)
(includes moving to 2G ram, allowance for ebaying 1G modules, purchase of 3 year svc ext. at $199)
Est Deliv: Mid March

the M400A is coming out with Sager and Eurocom, but Eurocom actually has a future section that tells of upcoming things. Funny how Sager leaves everyone in the dark till the last minute (even resellers). Oh and Eurocom confirmed that they will have it next week.

Can anyone guide me either in the Bios or within acer power management's power scheme so that I can set the cpu and screen brightness to default to max when switching to battery?

Go into ePower Mgt (or Control Panel, Power) and create your own power scheme. Select Max Batt then reset to your choices. That's how I did it. Was driving me nuts. Brightness at "0%" default on batteries? I don't THINK so.

Configuring the Eurocom M400A with 2GHz Dothan, Wireless, 1GB (2x512) RAM and 80GB HDD, XP pro and 8X DVD burner ... shows the price as $3400+ ..

That is almost $1200 more than the acer.

MRMSYVC: have you had the need to use a jump drive in the usb ports? I have the titanium cruzer and sometimes it is recognized and other times it isn't? Any ideas?

Do you know if all (4) usb's are higher speed?

It's not your Acer laptop that is the problem - it's the Sandisk Cruzer. I bought a 512MB Cruzer mini a few months ago, and I had the same problems you have now. It happened on every computer I tried using it on. I returned the Sandisk and caught a deal on a 1GB Lexar drive ($45 after rebate) and I haven't had a single problem.

I haven't used a jump drive. USBs recognize my external HDD and camera just fine. All ports "should be" USB 2.0 but I don't know how to prove it. Usually if I plug a hi-speed device into a USB 1.1, like on my company laptop, the system tells me so.
