Sager charged me on return!!!

I sent my laptop back within 30 days, so I could re-order with the X800 GPU. According to Discountlaptops.com Sager charged me 65 dollars for a "scratch" on the back of the screen (outer case). I looked it over well before it left. if their was a scratch, then it was teeny-tiny. Give me a break. Since when does a company charge a fee for something like that? I could see if it was a huge scratch, but come on.

Discount Laptops has asked for a picture of the scratch to see if it is legit. They did that on their own, prior to my asking.

I'll probably eat a 65 dollar fee. I don't think they can even sell these as new. Way to make me eat their costs of a return.

They did the exact same thing to me when I returned mine within the 30 day period.

I know it didn't have a scratch on it before I shipped it back. I guess it is possible to get one during shipping if it's not packaged correctly. I couldn't remember if I had packaged it exactly as how it was sent to me so I agreed to pay the $65.

That seems a little steep to me. I would bet that they can get that part for about $10-$15. If it costs more than that then they're being taken advantage of too.

I've returned 2, on one there was a charge for the same thing, on the other there was no charge. It's still way cheaper than a 15% restocking fee, though.

I returned my second one last Thursday and I made sure it was packaged correctly. I don't expect to be charged again.

i would take photos of it before i sent it back. that way, they can't charge me for something that isn't there.

i'm certain their was no scratch, unless it was very, very small (small enough that i did not see it when looking with a bright light).

I packaged it up exactly as it came. Same box, same padding, same everything.

Sounds really fishy to me.

Really fishy.

husky_fan,

Unfortunately, the only way to prove that it wasn't a fault of yours is to do what xmodz said. With pictures, you could definitively say that you did nothing to the computer and that the carrier is at fault. That way, if you shipped by UPS/Fedex/<some other insurance carrier>, you could recover the $65 as part of the coverage and not have to pay for it out of your pocket.

well i have a hard time believing it got scratched in the box, unless something poked through the box and damaged it.

Whatever. All the accessories were in their cardboard boxes as originally shipped.

Lesson learned I guess. Next time I'll take very detailed photos. Imagine if they dropped it and broke the screen. Doesn't take much to damage one of those screens. You could probably do it and not even damage the box much.

I got mine back from RMA with some very noticable scratches across the top, so it may be someone on their end doing this when they unpack.
the worst part about it is if they resold that machine they would NOT take off the $65 for the scratch
post #12 of 33
65$ isnt bad at all really, i recieved a DOA 9200 from dell, contacted their tech support to send it back the next day, and they still charged me a 15% restocking fee, for a DOA notebook...go dell..

Scratch the Scratches

Recommendations re alledgedly fraudulant "scratches"

1. Take it up with the credit card company (paying with a credit card is worth the extra protection you may get). Also, don't forget that legally you are dealing with the credit card company and the business who sold you the company, not necessarily Sager.

2. File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. They will record all complaints and help negotiate to get your money back. They will also give you great advice on how to proceed against Sager-Midern or the people who sold you the computer. Good to hear that Discount Laptops are proactively taking it up for you - when I last checked they had an excellent record with BBB. Having a good BBB record is a great reason to use a company.

3. Get together with all those who have been charged for "scratches" and file a fraud complaint against Sager-Midern with the police. While you're at it, try the advertising standards people, since their 10.5 lb laptop actually weighs about 12lbs even without the power brick (at least, the one they sent me does).

4. Don't let it go. You owe it to everyone else. $65 may or may not be a serious amount, but fraud is a serious crime. $65 this time, $600 next?

5. Don't buy Midern computers again.

These are all my unprofessional opinions and I'm often proven wrong (but I personally think they're good opinions).

I just checked my four year old Dell that has been lugged around across three continents and used every day. There's not a mark on it.

i agree with you. crunch has brought up some very good points.credit cards for reference and pix for proof. thats what i did. RMA will get mine on friday, if anything comes up i got pix and video of the condition i sent it in and the packing process. DISCOUNTLAPTOPS.com is by far the best reseller out there, just look at resellerratings.com!

just out of morbid curiousity, am i the only one who see's something morally wrong with returning a notebook and making the reseller take a loss simply because a new vid card came out? i mean if everyone did that notebook prices would skyrocket so much it wouldnt even be funny

no actually they dont. if the laptop has a scratch on it(like in huskys case) , that piece costs what 2 dollars? if anything inside the laptop is burnt out theyll charge you for it.usually 10 or even 15 x the actual worth.or sometimes they just charge you full price for a new component when a 10 dollar transistor repair has to be done. thats how they cut their loss if any. anybody who is returning their laptop in a 30 day period is just using the resellers quality of service. so when i paid 4 grand for my sager i was given the opprtunity , that whatever the reason i can return it if im not satisfied. whatever the reason. i know people will agree with me on this, its simply a fact.

you are just jealous

you're jealous that you don't have that opportunity to return it. Along those same lines; is it wrong that a company takes your money in full for an item, yet you don't see it for an undetermined period of time? If it is what you agree to when you enter into a sales contract, then it is not unfair. PCTorque, or in my case DiscountLaptops has my 2800 bucks in their possession for an item which they may not have paid for to the seller. Perhaps Discount Laptops has to pay up-front to Sager. Either way that is based on their agreement with Sager.

Name a manufacturer of of almost anything that won't let you return it? The cost they incur for returns is offset by the increase in sales, and profits, brought about by their quality service.

Maybe you should just buy the new ATI card, instead of complaining about those who had to return their stuff and wait to get another one for just a bit more money.

Not a question of jealousy--just a statement. People who do this drive up costs and that means money out of the pockets of people who spend the time and buy things with a little more foresight.

Yes, it is your right.

But how far do we take it? I know people who buy videocards, take them home, overclock them, then burn them out and then go back and exchange it. We all pay because this guy is too ignorent to know how to overclock?

I'm sorry you got socked for $65, I truly am, but I would be more sorry if you had bought a lemon and had to return it and got socked for the $65, rather than the fact that a newer model came out and you had to have the newest and nicest. And when you return the new one after another model comes out at the end of January, we'll all know why the price is so high.

ouch!! husky i must agree with you on the envy remark. i have dealt with that when i posted my configuration for the sager i just returned. while a lot of people were saying positive things , there was a bunch that were just spewing crap at me.along the lines of yd you get that ?thats no good thats 2 much! on the other hand alot of people would state the advantages of certain options.there is a lot of haters on this thread. its good that you stand up to it and not let it affect your choices. after all its not your fault that you ordered in a good time window as to see the revelation of a new card being released ,allowing you to take advantage of the 30 day grace period. some people just dont have that option so they feel they have to bring other people down with them. heres a toast to you HATERS
