NVIDIA vs ATI for 3dsMAX and Maya

Thread Starter
Hey guys

I want to revive the ages-old NVIDIA vs. ATI showdown, this time with a particular twist.

I am in architecture, and I usually use Discreet's 3dsMAX and Alias's MAYA.
I am ready to pull the trigger on a laptop. I need one, and Sager has been on top of my list of favorites for quite a while.

GAMING is NOT a priority for me.

Now, the burning question is------> Has anyone had a similar experience with a Sager laptop and 3dsmax/Maya, especially for handling polygon-heavy scenes and renderings with lots of raytracing/shadows/lights?

In both the 3dsMax and Maya support websites, they favor NVIDIA Quadro and ATI FIRE GL graphics cards, which I believe are for desktops. The Max website indicates that the list of supported cards DOES NOT INCLUDE any portable systems. The Maya website specifically discourages the use of NVIDIA's GeForce256, GeForce2, GeForce3 or GeForce4 cards, and the only tested ATI Radeon is the 8800. I have the feeling that these data are pretty outdated.

Should I wait for the NVIDIA-equipped 9860, or do you think the 4750 will perform OK under those circumstances? If all's OK, I'd prefer to go for the 4750 because of the AMD 64 and lighter weight, and because I can order it right now.

Thanks for any help.

The 6800Go in the 9860 is many times better than the MR9700 that is in the 4750. The real question is whether the 6800Go is better than the MR X800 in the 9860. I have no answer to that; unfortunately I have not seen any benchmarks between them for 3dsMAX or MAYA.

if you do a search for maya on the forum i think you'll find a thread started by someone who is also doing primarily cad/cam work. He posted numbers for a maya test with his 6800go. Unfortunately no one has yet received the 9860 so its impossible to know which work best with 3dsmax and maya. Its a realtively safe assumption however that they are the two best performing mobile cards for any app. As soon as I have (maybe i should say IF i ever get) my 9860 with the x800 i'll post the results of the maya test in that thread (too lazy to search for it now).

alright i'm not too lazy as it turns out. Click

After doing a Google Search, it turns out that either will give you near the same performance.....

Toms Hardware: nVidia vs ATi 6800 vs X800 workstation MAYA

Keep in mind these are for the desktop cards, but the chips are the same & the drivers are the same, so it willl give you an idea about their respect performances.

Woah! These are workstation class graphics cards and don't represent what to expect from the 6800 or X800 (gaming cards). In the past, Nvidia was the only way to go when it came to these types of applications (even with the gaming cards if you couldn't afford a workstation card). However, the X800 does look promising in regards to OpenGL as shown in the Doom3 results. The 6800 DDR1 still has an edge on it. If you're really interested in video performance for professional apps, you may want to look at workstation class laptops that have the Nvidia Quadro FX Go1000. I've read that they are going to come out with the FX1400 sometime soon, but I haven't seen a date.

That being said, it's hard to find one of these cards that's not paired with a Pentium M processor. I bought a Dell M60 with a PM2.1 and a Quadro FX1000 at the same time as a Sager 9860 with a P4 3.6 and the 6800. I benchmarked them both quite extensively. The Sager was 2-3x faster in games and typical apps. However in the professional apps benchmarks, the Dell was usually a little faster. Keep in mind that the technology in the Dell is quite antiquated compared to the 9860. I decided to keep the 9860 based on price/performance. The Dell was over $5000 and it was only slightly faster in one app and the other app that I run a lot is CPU-I/O intensive and the 9860 came out way on top.

i own and 8790 with the ATI 9700 and i am also in architecture. i frequently use both 3dstudio and maya:

while it runs both programs very well i have noticed that there are some real time rendering errors in 3D max while using openGL drivers, this may have something to do with the lack of propper support for the video card, but i am unsure. as far as maya goes i havent notived the same problem and the comuter handles some complex rendering well. i was even so bold one time while waiting for an emense 30 hour batch render to try my hand at DOOM 3 while i was waiting. i played for a few hours at full settings with almost no noticeable performance loss in DOom. the rendering also continued with no problems (some slight slow down) i was pretty impressed by this.

but since the newer cards have come out for both systems i cant really answer which would be better, just that these laptops are pretty powerful and can handle most of what we throw at them.

I've always like nvidia drivers waaay more. They support more opengl features, like dual planes and are significantly faster (in opengl mode). I haven't been impressed with the catalyst drivers when working with large complex scenes with lots of textures.

Those cards are the X800 & the 6800:

FireGL V5100 is the X800Pro with 12 pipes:

Quadro FX 3400 is the 6800 Ultra with 16 pipes:

It is a much better comparison than a MR9700 in MAYA.
