Random Freeze...

I am running debian default kernel with no problems and no freezes... but when i compile a new kernel i get random freezes...
It freezes in the console and in X. In X the mouse can still move and the system seems to still work but at a super slow speed, close enough to be a freeze. The only thing i am able to do is power cycle.
I have tried 2.6.8.1 2.6.6 2.6.9 2.6.10 all the same.
Maybe I am missing something in the kernel?
Anyone have any ideas?
TIA

Look in your source directory for .config file. open them up in your favorite editor and compare line by line. See what's dfferent between them.

What's your hardware? I had some major issues with my 8890 and SMP/SMT, it would randomly crash, but not completely, just like you said. Input doesn't seem to be recognized by the computer... It solved everything as soon as SMP was turned off though...

i have the 5680 p4 ht.
i have a pcmcia card that i use and that is about it...
The default kernel that comes with debian works perfect..
I just cannot figure out what i am missing in my own kernel. =(

Ok... I got my 2.6.9 kernel to work... BUT... I had to set my processor to 386 and also remove symmetric multi-processing support...
Anyone else have this problem or know what i should do?

Did you try just turning off SMP by itself? I have heard of this particular feature giving several people problems and usually just turning itoff works fine.

it sucks having to turn off smp... won't that cause a major difference when using the computer for compiling?

Not as much as you would think... I've used my 8890 both with and without SMP/SMT, and it's about the same... Linux threading is a bit more powerful, to say the least...
