Ordered a Dell 700m, did I make a good choice?

Hi, I know that there will be a new Sonoma Chipset coming for laptops, but I went with the $500 off $1599 deal a week ago and ordered a brand new 700m. I am coming from a HP zt3000 laptop, and I needed something smaller. I ordered a 700m for my sister and she absolutely loves it and I loved using it myself when installing programs for her. The keyboard is kind of cramped, but still usable. I put a Hitachi 7k60 hard drive in my HP and I'm definitely swapping hard drives as I don't want to sell my HP with a $200 hard drive that I paid for at the time. I already ordered a NEC ND6500A DVD burner and I'm going to swap that out with the Dell 700m as well. I'm wondering if I made a good decision because my HP did have its own graphics chipset. I do have a pretty fast 3Ghz P4 desktop, so I'm just looking for a notebook that I can take with me to do occasional gaming, surfing the web and word processing. I'm wondering if I made a good decision since the Sonoma chipset is around the corner that may drop the prices even more. I paid $1234.xx shipped including tax for this config:

1.8GHz Pentium M
60GB HD (slower that is going to be swapped with my HP HD)
256MB RAM (going to use the extra 512MB I got from my HP)
Intel 2200 Wireless B/G
1 Year Warranty

Good stuff man, i did pretty much the same thing! and i'm not regretting it. My 700m just came yesterday and this thing is incredible! the quality the look everything! The thing about sonoma is that i doubt its gonna be too noticalbe difference in a ultraportable. Also, i dont think dell is gonna upgrade the 700m soon, at least i didn't hear anything about it. Also we got a great deal, period!

Just got my 700m 3 days ago, and i'm loving it. I think you made a good decision whether Sonoma laptops come out and are better or not (i doubt we'll see *that* much difference really), the 700m is still really nice
(runs Gentoo Linux well too!)

Woohoo! I guess I'm not the only female on this forum. Make that female linux-user. Oh, make that female linux-user with a 700m (mine should be arriving on ~Tuesday and installing Suse 9.2 pro is on the list of early tasks...)

good price. I got a 1.6ghz, but a DVD+RW, and a spare battery for about $1300....but that was when they first came out. The more, and more I see these newer deals, I feel like I got a pretty darn good deal myself.

I was in the same boat you were. I finally decided on the 700m, and I'm going to list some of my reasoning below.

- Size. I realize that the difference between the two is relatively small - the HP is only marginally larger - but I already have a full-featured desktop machine. I wanted something I would be willing and able to carry around easily, something small enough that I could justify having it with me.
- Aesthetics. I love how the 700m looks; I'm like a fake Apple user, only instead of sitting in Starbucks sipping a latte and using an iBook, I'm sitting in a Dunkin Donuts drinking decaf and working on my 700m. (joke)
- Build quality. I've played with a DV1000 in the store, and I thought it just felt a bit... flimsy. The machine didn't feel solid, the buttons looked and felt a bit hokey, and it just generally looked and felt a lot cheaper.
- Price. I ordered a refurbished 700m - Dell offers a full-length warranty on all refurbished notebooks - and it came out to a grand total of... $850. The DV1000, when specced out the same, came to at least $1050. $200 may not sound like a lot in the long run, but when added on top of the other points I've already mentioned...

I love how the 700m looks. Yes, it's smaller, but for me it's perfect. I don't need or want a desktop replacement laptop - my PC works just fine, thank you - just something I can have with me on the go. Something that's attractive, functional, and quick. The 700m fits the bill.

^ Same with me. I was trying to decide between a dozen models, but then I realized that I already had a desktop which could do everything I wanted and the point of getting a notebook was portability so I ended up choosing the 700m. However, it isn't here yet. Lets hope the purolator man knocks on my door today!

I also hope I made the right decision...

2.0 GHz
512 1 DIMM
DVD/RW
40 Gb (to be upgraded)
8-cell
XP Pro
Dell 1350 wireless
$1649

I read this forum for a week before I finally gave in and bought the 700m. It will be here Monday. I went ahead and just bought the 2.0, ouch!

Anyway, for $1649, could I have purchased a better laptop?

I looked at a Lifebook (just b/c the name sounded cool)!

i've had my 700m now for what 4 months or so now and love it still...every night when i'm lonely i touch it.

get an ipod or something if you want good speakers...laptops have sucky speakers no matter which one you get...besides if you are listening to anything on it, it is either by headphone or through outboard speakers, so do on board speakers really matter?

i'll say it again and again, figure out what you need the computer for and the features you need, then go from there. everyone is different. i wanted lightweight, did not need it to do the same thing as my desktop, etc, etc, so i chose 700m. i'm student as well. i much prefer lightweight portability over other things...i lugged around an 8lbs'er for a semester and it sucked.
