Toshiba SD-R2412 Won't read new DVDs

My Toshiba combo drive won't read newer DVDs (movies.) It reads cd, cd-r, older DVD movies, and DVD-r just fine. Only when I try to get it to read newer DVD movies does it have a problem. I called the warranty company and they said they can't help me because since the drive reads other formats, it's not a hardware issue. I also have an external DVD drive and it's able to read the disks fine. Is it a new security thing that the SD-R2412 can't handle? Thanks In Advance.

What software are you using to view/attempt to view the new DVD's?

G-Omaha Thanks for responding. I use WinDVD 6, but it doesn't matter. The OS isn't seeing the disc in "My Computer." Also WinDVD will play it if I load it from my external DVD drive.

Which titles are you having problems with? Is "The Forgotten" one of them?

If you are trying to read DVD+R/DVD+RW media, that ain't gonna happen. The drive will only read DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, and DVD-RAM media.

If that's not it, then I think that it's a hardware issue. On my older 3360V, with it's original DVD/CD drive, it sometimes lost the ability to play DVDs. I read somewhere that if you boot with the offending DVD in the player, that it would work. Tried it and to my suprise, it did work. You might try it and see if does anything - no promises that it will work. I'd "raise hell" with the warranty company as their "basis" is faulty. Now if the drive reads DVDs and could not read CDs, would they say that is OK as the drive reads other formats? If the disks that you are complaining about are not "commercially made", then, it is probable that the drive does not like and incompatable with the media - happens often for burned copies on cheap media.

I'm a Netflix subscriber and I'd say the drive doesn't read about 90% of the DVDs lately. Off the top of my head, Smallville season 2 and 3 (that's 12 DVDs), Troy, Ghost in the Shell (Stand alone Complex), Ghost in the Shell 2, I could go on. Seemslike movies released in the last 2 years aren't readable by my player. There are a few that will work but ususally they are not high profile movies. Are new DVDs coming out on DVD+R? If that's the case, that could be the problem. Do the movie boxes say what format they are using? Thanks again.

New DVD-ROMs are not coming out on DVD+R. Suspect that Netflik has provided you a copy of the "shows" that have been burned on DVD+R. Depending on how they accomplished this, it may or may not identify the DVD as a DVD+R. DOwnload a copy of DVDInfo-Pro and accomplish a "media" check for the offensive DVD's from your external unit. I can then cross the media ID and see what the disk actually are.

Is your external DVD device capable of reading the DVD+R's?

Thanks for the tips G-Omaha. I ran a media check on 6 DVDs and didn't see anything out of the ordinary. I've marked whether I could read them or not. Yes, my external does read +R (Pioneer 108.) I did not have a problem reading any of them on my external. Seems like a flaky drive. Defective? Laser out of alignment? Thanks again.

Conclusion would be that drive is defective.

Yeah I came to that conclusion myself. However, a few things puzzle me. Why only DVDs? Why only certain DVDs. If I can read a disc the first time, I never have a problem with it? Are the files on the DVD packed in differently? On a side note, on my backups, I don't have a problem reading them even if I had a problem with the original. Thanks again for all your help G-Omaha.

Actually, I'd bet that the DVD's that you are using are actully DVD+R's that have had the book marks, etc changed to be a DVD-ROM. If I could "see" the disk, I'd have a better idea. If they are purple (even the slighest tint) rather than a silver (maybe with a slight yello tint) - then this would confirm that they are in fact DVD+R media. Several drives and duplicators allow youto change the media type. Just a thought.

Are you by any chance using the Omega Drivers?
The reason I ask is because I have the same optical drive with the same problem (as do quite a few others) and discovered that there is an video playback issue when using the Omega drivers.
It's been discussed in more detail in the drivers section of the forums.
I forget the exact thread though.

Hope that helps.
