This is my first post to this forum...although I've been lurking for several weeks now while I've been researching my purchase.
My first laptop was a Sager that I purchased in 1996. It was a P-33MHz and I paid for an upgrade to 24MB of RAM to help me while running WIN95. It served me well for 4 years and still runs today (after a hard drive replacement), and the battery life is now down to 5 minutes or so...so I just leave it plugged in to something.
My mother-in-law now wants to to find her a good notebook that will last her several years. The basic needs are MS Office, internet, etc. She wants to be able to watch DVD movies as well as burn CDs.
It looks like most current models should do this fine. She won't need the fastest processor, and I'd say she'd trade speed for a cooler running machine. (I remember by 33MHz unit getting hot enough that I couldn't use it on my lap directly for more than an hour or so.)
Anyone looking to upgrade that wants to sell their old one. MY budget is $1000 which I think should get me a machine that would have been close to top of the line a year ago.
