WANTED: Used notebook around $1000

This is my first post to this forum...although I've been lurking for several weeks now while I've been researching my purchase.

My first laptop was a Sager that I purchased in 1996. It was a P-33MHz and I paid for an upgrade to 24MB of RAM to help me while running WIN95. It served me well for 4 years and still runs today (after a hard drive replacement), and the battery life is now down to 5 minutes or so...so I just leave it plugged in to something.

My mother-in-law now wants to to find her a good notebook that will last her several years. The basic needs are MS Office, internet, etc. She wants to be able to watch DVD movies as well as burn CDs.

It looks like most current models should do this fine. She won't need the fastest processor, and I'd say she'd trade speed for a cooler running machine. (I remember by 33MHz unit getting hot enough that I couldn't use it on my lap directly for more than an hour or so.)

Anyone looking to upgrade that wants to sell their old one. MY budget is $1000 which I think should get me a machine that would have been close to top of the line a year ago.

I have an 8880 with a 2.4 Ghz p4 and the ATI Mob. Radeon 7500.
It has 2 40 GB drives and 512 MB of RAM.
TV Tuner, MP3 player with 23 MB SD card.
It has 4 USB 1.1 ports, a parallel and serial port, a VGA port, a Memory Stick drive and floppy drive. It has Line In, Mic In and Line Out. It can also have SPDIF out.
I purchased the extended warranty which is also transferrable.
It comes with XP Home.

You said 1000, but I need to get 1200 out of this thing. That is close.

I have a couple of questions for you about it.

Is it noisy enough to be intrusive in a quiet room?
What kind of battery life are you getting?
What condition is the case in (scratches, gouges, etc)?
What resolution do you run?
Have you had any problems with it that required repair?

1. I don't find it so. The power brick that you plug into the wall has a fan it it which is a little noticable, but I don't find it intrusive.

2. I get almost 2 hours. 1:50 or so. But I am running with 3 things plugged into USB and a PC Card WIFI card.

3. Case is in good condition which very minor nicks. Nothing noticeable.

4. I run at 1280x1024

5. Yes they replaced the MOBO and a HDD. But it has run perfectly since.

And remember you will have 3 yrs of warranty left with the Philips warranty.
