Hi all,

My first post on this forum (just found it!! ). Here's a review I recently posted on another site. This laptop may have already been reviewed but it can't hurt to post my take anyway.

FYI, I'm a long time PC enthusiast and professional. I've owned several laptops (ranging from top-end Toshiba and HP models to used/older Dell and Gateway notebooks). So basically I feel I'm qualified to share my $0.02

Purchased yet another laptop recently and promised a short review once I had spent some time using it.

I have the 80GB model with wireless G and a DVD burner. Appears to write blank DVD +R media at 4x and -R at 2x. CDs are 24x. Not too bad for an after-thought item.

It comes equiped with an Athlon XP-M processor. The multiplier's unlocked so it changes speeds quite a bit, but looks like 1.66ghz is the tops. I think they rate it at 2200+. Not bad for basic use.

The really sweet part with this laptop so far has been the size, or lack of. At just over 4 pounds it's really a remarkable machine. Have had no performance issues in photoshop or internet use. Haven't tried gaming because I can't imagine wanting to game on a 12.1" LCD unless I was REAL bored.

The wireless range is fine. Touchpad has a nice feel and response.

I played a DVD for a while, and was impressed with the LCD's quality and the small speakers did fine (just loud enough to cut through ambient noises). Surprisingly clear.

Battery life is fair, averaging 2 hours with regular use. Says 2.5 hours but I don't see it. There's a way of calibrating the battery with the laptop's bios, but I can't see that helping with a new battery (should already have been calibrated out of the box). [I have since calibrated the battery and fan with no gains in battery life/longevity]

If you have any questions fire away. For under $1,000 after rebates from Circuit City, this was a great deal. I highly recommend this for business use. There's nothing cheap about this laptop despite its great price tag.

How is your fan doing?

Hi,

I purchased a 3250H1-01 about 1,5 months ago. I also am very happy with it except one thing. (The only difference between this one and yours is that DVD-CDRW drive and 60GB HDD. )

My fan runs all the time. It's getting really annoying. It's not as loud as a desktop PC fan, but it quite audible since it sits on your lap. (I don't block the fan by keeping on my leg).

This started after i did the fan learning in the bios. Averatec couldn't give a satisfactory answer to solve the problem. I'm thinking about either using a software program tocontrol the fan or somehow reset the bios so it would turn back to factory default settings. How is your fan doing?

Mine only runs at an audible level when the cpu is doing a lot of work. If I could be so bold -- have you checked for adware or something using 100% of your CPU resources? What are the temps in the room you're using this in? Just trying to eliminate some possibilities not related to the laptop.

Good news on the centrino model!

I just found the reason of my fan problem. I forgot the power options at "Always On" which locked the cpu speed at 1.67 Ghz. That's why the fan was spinning non stop to keep the processor cool (36C-37C). But now after changing the power options back to "Portable/Laptop" everything is back to normal. Fan spins occasionally. Most of the time the laptop is silent as it should be. I am very happy with my laptop again.

Well, I've also bought it recently because of perfect (IMHO) price/what-you-get. It's being used as a second computer, so I don't need cool Video Card, that makes it more "hungry" and heavy. Model is 3250HX-01.
For it's price I've got fast processor, lot of RAM, DVD-RW drive, and a huge 80gig HDD.
But in comparison with my old laptop (IBM ThinkPad X21) the case isn't as nice as it is in IBM - simple, not expensive, silver-coloured plastic.
It doesn't make laptop more expensive.
The only thing that annoys me is the fan... It SCREAMS as my jigsaw... But it seems that I've found a solution - a program called RMclock (can be found VIA google), I've changed processor's multiplier to 5x (and the voltage too), then in BIOS I used the "calibrate fan" option... So know It's almost noiseless
Hope this will help to somebody else.
Going to calibrate battery this night, and test performance.
I'd recommend this one for people, who want to get a cool Laptop without paying a lot of $$$.

p.s. I can make some pics for anyone who wants (for ex. if you want to buy one)
