Im a student, and need a new laptop. I dont care about mobility, or any of that stuff. What company would you guys say makes faster, multi-tasking, longer lasting(meaning wont slow up on me after a year or 2). Anything will help. Thanks

hp is basicaly compaq with a jerked up pricetag and a few mods on the appearance side of things.

here are a few cheap stores to hit:
newegg.com
mwave.com
ibuypower.com
cyberpower.com
discountlaptops.com

as for the "longer lasting" most people will tell you go IBM but they are by far not the FASTEST fish in the pond.

if you want batt life go P-M (1.7 or better) but if you want raw power grab an AMD64 (at any rating you desire)

if you are planning on games and so on, grab a 128mb ati 9700

here are some of my ideas on what you may want:

Compal CL56 (5 hours bat) (mwave and ibuypower and discountlaptops carry it)
Uniwill 258kao (2 hour bat, but more raw power) (mwave or ibuypower.com)
AOpen 1556g (?) (almost like the compal, bit cheaper tag)

stay away from hp/compaq (as well as dell) if you can, not the best fish in the pond for your money

abf is right; there is not much of a difference since they are the same company. About a year or two ago HP purchased Compaq. Personally I would buy something else, but if you get a good enough price go for it.

yeah, all an hp machine is, is an over priced compaq, and as for what wont slow up on you in a few years.....any machine will keep up with its original preformance if you preform basic maintanance tasks, keep it ad free, scan for viruses regularly, defrag, and if all else fails a system format usually will get all preformance back

Beg to differ with you folks. I have had Compaq and HP before and after the merger. Wouldn't take a Compaq for free before or now. HP brand is a decent machine and from a price point has been undercutting most everyone. Compaq and HP may be the same company wise but I can tell you that HP branding was not dragged down to the level of a Compaq. Whether or not Compaq was dragged up to the level of HP is something I'm not willing to chance. Check out the ZD8000 (I currently have the ZD7000) and compare that to Sager, Toshiba, Dell, Etc. for similar configs. Right now I own a Sager, Toshiba (Daughter's) and HP ZD7000 laptops. Have had IBM, Compaq as well. Most of the resellers get their builds/components from the same two companies anyway. Even the best lemon up occasionally.

Just my 2 cents.

I have owned Sager, Toshiba, Sony, and Dell laptop computers. I currently have a Compaq R3000, and must say that I am impressed with it. I've heard plenty of horror stories, and won't deny that they probably did happen. All I can say in my humble opinion is that HP/Compaq has come a long ways over the years. That's just my view since I haven't had any problems with my current laptop.

With technology moving as fast as it is, the model you buy today will be outpaced with in six months. I have a Compaq Presario Notebook (see sig) which I purchased in 2002 and it is still going strong. It is the best computer I've ever had. Not as fast as my Dell, but then the Dell is newer. I also have 2 Compaq desktops which are still running great. As others have mentioned, since the merger with HP, Compaqs and HP are the same machine with different cosmetics. The worst computer I've ever owned was a Sony notebook. My advice is just search for notebooks in your price range and decided what you need from their. When I bought my Dell I had narrowed the choices down to the Dell 8600 and Compaq R3000 series. The Dell finally one with the Pentium M CPU. That is the best CPU for a notebook (my opinion).

I just looked at the Compaqs - they look pretty well packed and stacked for about $150 LESS than the comparable HP which is undercutting most everyone else already.

All I can say is "If the Compaqs are as good quality wise as the HPs how can you go wrong with a DTR at these prices!

I have had 2 Compaqs, 3 Dell, 1 IBM, 1 gateway, and a tosiba.
Loved the compaqs
hated the dells
ibm was nice but not there in the speed departement
gateway blows
tosiba was way to much $$ for what I got.
Also have work on Sony and they are way over priced and cheap IMO.
If you want details about my expercises let me know.
