Sonoma W_a_t_c_h List

Well, it's time to start a Sonoma watch list. That is, a list of vendors who are taking orders for Sonoma laptops. This should prove a valuable resource for those looking for Sonoma laptops during the next few weeks or months.

If the vendor is taking pre-orders, it would be good to add an estimated ship date as well.

The only one that I know taking orders for a Sonoma laptop is Dell.

I6000.

Any others?

Acer 8103 and 8104 at www.cdw.com Estimated to ship in 1-2 weeks. Both will carry the X700 ATI with 128megs. Not the cheapest but not bad either as they are loaded to the gills. I'm personally waiting to see what the I9300 comprises.

IBM T43 is on their site, isn't it?

I think they will, but it will be Lenovo that pushes them that way. Unfortunately, I don't think it will be typical Thinkpad quality. When...? I'm guessing sometime in the next 12-18 months.

They need to do this to quelch the rumors that Thinkpad innovation is going to wane after the sale to Lenovo.

$ 2299.00 for the 8104 does NOT seem out of line to me. Especially when you look at what's on board.

I agree jj, it's not a bargain buster but the thing is just maxed out with everything so that's a damn good price. I really want a 17 incher but if Dell doesn't come through soon, the Acer is lookin mighty nice

I was looking at the tabook for the Thinkpads and it looks like none of the T43's will be released before February and the good ones won't show up until April. I think the only ones that look worth investing in will be costing a pretty penny. IBM won't keep their market share by following this plan. I've been using Thinkpads for 10 years and I'm ready to bale out.

ACER and the Dell D610 are looking very competitive.

Here's a link to the IBM tabook listing all the upcoming models and specs.

I went to the ACER's USA site and they have the 8100 listed on there now. Still no sign of the Aspirre 1690 on their site though. The 8100 is the best looking, best features that I've seen to date of the new announced Sonoma laptops.

FWIW, I have an ACER 8000 that has been running non-stop in my office for better than 6 months. It's about 2 years old now and has been problem free and very reliable. The only drawback was it didn't have DVI pass through with the dock/port replicator. I think they've fixed that.

IBM never really pushed the performance envelope, but they've been extremely innovative compared to just about everybody else.

IBM invented the eraser head (aka TrackPoint), had the first wireless consumer laptops, came out with a RISC-processor-based Unix notebook several years ago, had some interesting pen-based notebooks over 10 years ago, had a very cool keyboard called the "butterfly" on the 701C, etc., etc.

If you don't consider IBM laptops innovative, what do you consider innovative?

Although most of their innovation is useless for my needs, the one thing that they provide that many other vendors lack is very good support. If you have a problem, they fix it "stat". I have experienced 3 day tournament when a laptop fails or needs depot repair service. IMO, this is quite remarkable.

This may be the very reason that IBM sold their PC business. The support costs were killing them. Rather than offer lousey support like everybody else, they elected to sell the business. Doesn't bode well for the future if Lenovo decides to cut costs.

Just curious... which model are you contemplating? I'm thinking the same thing, but I may wait to order until they actually get them in stock. I don't want to place an order and then play the waiting game. If I order, I want it shipped.
