Why MWAVE's CL-56 is so cheap. - Page 6

Mine's still in Cali. But it's shipped, with an ETA of feb 1. Yay!
Mine just got here -- unboxing it now. I'll follow-up after I get it running just to let everyone know if it works okay and is as advertised. I don't think there's all that much point in a full review with all the ones that have come before but I'll answer any questions that anyone might have.

Just got mine too - installing XP now. So far I like it a lot - light and thin (considering 15" screen and performance), nice keyboard, CL56 chassis itself is very nicely made. Uses 65W power supply - will be easier to run outside with my telescope - my older Inspiron 8200 uses 90W.

guys let me know about your machine so far...im thinking about buying the uniwill 258ka0 from them so how was your overall experience with mwave and your system?? is it as good as advertised?

Neuron - what the hell is 'easy button' ? Also, what do I need to install for wireless on/off switch to work ?
how do like it so far dimitrir??
dimitrir: "Easy Button" is the driver for the two round buttons beside the power button, so you can assign them to launch whatever you want. Haven't gotten to the wireless yet, downloading the Proset 8.1 drivers right now -- I'm hoping it'll just work once I get that installed.

Great so far - for almost 'desktop replacement' performance, it is very light and thin. I do not have any problems with screen viewing angle mentioned here before.

My only complaint so far is that like all modern notebooks it does not have serial port, so I'll need to get an USB-Serial adapter to control my telescope (LX200GPS).

I just used 'CL56 Dive CD' and everything worked right away. Installing SP2 now ;-)

dimitrir: Yeah, I knew I was going to be upgrading to the Intel drivers so I went ahead and started with them. Worked flawlessly, including the switch.

ItsMoney: I agree with dimitrir, I couldn't be more pleased so far. It's a heck of a deal for the price I paid ($1365). I do see the viewing angle issue that people complain about, and it's there, but it doesn't bug me too much. I'm not going to be watching DVDs on it, all my use is with it sitting right in front of me. Pictures do not do it justice -- it's much thinner in real life than it appears in the pictures.

Yeah Mine finally shipped and should get here on wednesday! I'm going to be watching dvds on it so I hope this viewing angle thing doesn't affect me 2 much. But I mean I will still be able to watch them so thats cool. Now the waiting..... ugh, but at least it shipped! Oh by the way did they really come with pc3200?

The viewing angle is not that bad, I didn't mean to alarm you. You'll be very happy with the laptop, I'm sure. I definitely am.

As far as the RAM goes, they did indeed use PC3200 as promised. It is only running at PC2700 speed since that's what the chipset supports in the laptop, but CPU-Z reports it as 2x512MB PC3200 modules from Apacer @ 166MHz, 2/3/3/7.

Yeah, I verified this too.

XEmacs and xterm windows look great on CL56, and now, the serious usability test - games I play :

- WWII Online
- World Of Warcraft
- Half Life 2 / Counter Strike:Source

Installed and tried all 3 - all work very satisfactory.

For $1285, I'm very pleased with the CL-56

Is Apacer the brand? I thought the RAM were multiwave as listed. Or did they just run out.

Stupid question, the pic on the website shows a silver color (which would be the model with integrated graphics, correct), but the description says its blue.

For those of you who have received your cl56 from Mwave, can you confirm if its blue or silver?

Thanks.

I do not think mwave makes it's own memory - it sounds like a small computer shop, so, most likely 'multiwave' brand is the no-name stuff which was the cheapest for them.
