i'm pissed. i ordered my CL56 back on Wednesday of last week, payed for the 'next day shipping' and according to thier website, it hasn't even shipped out yet!!! i called for status yesterday evening, and the chick told me that it just went into assembly; yesterday evening!!! i ordered it on wednesday afternoon!!! i just want it here, now, so i can play with it.

grrr..

aesoprock_00: Sometime Wednesday afternoon is when they went out of stock, that's what holding you up. The good news is that it it went in for assembly today it's probably going to ship today or tomorrow at the latest. I ordered last Wednesday morning and had my box in hand Friday afternoon, clear across the country.

So, I'm still installing software onto my new CL56, and noticed something interesting. The machine comes with very little software. One of the cds is WinDVD 4. However, on the machine, powerdvd is preinstalled. Odd, no?
Well it shouldn't be odd if you bought it with no OS. That's what the WinDVD disc is meant for.

Thanks for the piece of mind. i ordered it late friday afternoon (EST, so probably early afternoon PST where mwave is), but i think this might have been the problem. i probably ordered it just after they went out of stock. Well, i got my tracking number email today, and i paid for the 2 day shipping (i initially had the next day shipping, but i thought it would go out on friday, so i figured it wouldn't make a difference.) i wish i would have stuck with the next day shipping instead of the 2 day, i could have had it tomorrow instead of thursday, but i've waited so long, i can wait another 2 days. here's hoping for no dead pixels!!!

I got two dvd programs: one installed (powerdvd), the other on cd (windvd). powerdvd != windvd.

Well I meant not everyone bought it with an OS installed and with extras, in which case, they would need the WinDVD disc if they wanted the player.
Yep, I did not purchase it with an OS since I have a Microsoft Action Pack subscription and had available XP licenses that I could use. Made ithe price from MWave even more attractive.

Mwave with a DVD burner?

I am looking hard at the MWave CL-56, but I don't see where they will let you buy one with a DVD burner. Has anyone purchased one with a DVD burner from MWave?

I called and asked a sales rep at Mwave if I could get a DVD burner and she told me that if it was not an option to choose on the website that I could not. I have to admit, though, she seemed a bit inexperienced. You may want to call Mwave yourself to double check this.

Ok, here's a question for all you people who have just acquired your CL56
There has been mention of ripple effects because of the screen backing not being as solid as one could hope. Is this something that actually comes up, and how big of an effect is it?
I have the same question too

Not that anyone would be purposely be pressing the back of the LCD for any good reason, but it's a concern of build quality and durability. For example, since this is the case, is there the potential for damage if something is pressing up against the lid when the CL56 is in a bag?
Yes, there is a little ripple on the LCD, but you're going to get that on most laptops (except for those milspec models with the metal chassis) I can certainly live with it and it's better than on my old Inspiron 8100 which made me worry for the screen life.

As to your question about stuff pressing up against the back of the LCD. There is always a risk no matter the laptop. If it's something wide and flat like a textbook, it should't be a problem. If it's your football cleats, better to put them in another bag.

Ok, thanks. I just thought I would ask here first because I have seen other sites that offer the CL-56 with a DVD burner up to 8X.

But I always keep my cleats next to my laptop! It's particularly good when I've just been playing frisbee in them and they're nice and muddy

If you use DDR400 memory on a DDR333 machine you get the same frequency but better timmings.

My D600 is running with DDR400 memory and, while still running at 133 MHz (DDR266) it offers about the same memory bandwidth as a regular 166 MHz (DDR333) system.

Bandwidh is determined by both frequency and timmings.
I don't believe the CL56 lets you select what timings to use. On top of that, the real-world speed benefit from using faster timings is absolutely nothing.

oops nvm

Sorry, but that's ignorance audacity. All modules do have a ROM wich contains preset timmings, I belive it's called STD or STR. If a module is CL2.5 at 333 MHz it's CL2 at 266 MHz and so on.

When I installed DDR400 memory on my Dell Latitude D600, it jumped from 595 MB/s to 710 MB/s in memory bandwidth. It remained at DDR266, but the EFFICIENCY of the bus increased.

In 3D Mark 2003, my Latitude D600 jumped from 300 or so 3D Marks to more than 600 just by upgrading the memory. It may not be the general rule, but using better memory does have an effect on the system performance.

Excuse me? You just reiterated exactly what I said. DIMMs have preset timings, and the CL56 does not let you override them; you're stuck using the presets.

And I'll repeat again, the slightly higher memory bandwidth difference between two differently timed DDR333 modules (Or a DDR400 module running at DDR333) has absolutely no real-world benefit.
