Why MWAVE's CL-56 is so cheap. - Page 3

Mwave has always had good shipping. Even when they say it will take 3 days, I always got it by the second day.

The exact same setup I was going to go for Clearly a case of great minds thinking alike... either that or of fools all being the same, I suppose...
On a completely unrelated note, what is the deal with the banana smilies? It's not something I've encountered on the other fora I frequent...

quick last minute decision

Well I ordered a Sager 3790 yesterday, sat at school the entire day today thinking of what I did, and cancelled the order. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure its a great notebook, but for the price of the cl56 on mwave with more upgrades than the sager and a much lower price, I couldn't pass it up.

So now I'm a, soon to be, proud owner of a CL56 from Mwave:
1.8 ghz
80gb hd
1 gig 3200 ram

$100s cheaper.

Ordered it minutes ago. Hope everything turns out perfect , but just in case....

Yeah i bought a cl56 though a guy on this site for $1300 its a 1.6, 80gig hd, 1 gig ram but it came with some extras, a case and such plus Im in canada so I neeeded to try to get it accross the boarder with the least fee's possible which I can do though a private seller. I dont think mwave would help me out htere

I got a dvd burner too, incase i run out of room

Well i cant wait for it
Well all have to post what we think of our cl56's once we get them
post #45 of 172
Yeah don't worry I'll definetely post about it once I get mine

That's an incredible deal. I may have to get a CL56 instead of the new Travelmate 8100 that I was leaning to. The X700 is miles better than the MR9700 that the CL56 has, but not nearly $1000 better. If only it had a widescreen, but I suppose I can cope.

I thought that the X700 was supposed to perform roughly equivalently to an MR9700, but I could well be mistaken. I thought it was just that X700 was more upgradeable. But in any case, $1000 is a lot of money. You could buy an extremely nice flat panel monitor for that, for instance.
I'm still torn on the question of widescreen. I guess for editing code, vertical space is more important than horizontal, although having several windows open at once next to each other is also useful.

Nope, the X700 is roughly twice as fast as the MR9700 according to benchmarks that have been posted here. Take a look at the Travelmate 8100 thread (first few pages, I think) for the graphs.

You're right, I could use another 2001FP.

You're right, I write code for a living and the vertical space is far more important. The other main feature that the CL56 doesn't have that would make it a slam-dunk is DVI output. I hate having to go VGA into a high end LCD since I plan to run it dual-headed when I'm working at my desk.

Decisions, decisions. I think I'm about 90% sold on a 1.8GHz CL56 now. That price is just too tempting.

Well What happened is I ordered a Sager 9860 back in November and realized it was waaaaaay too much notebook to carry around, so I returned it and opted for a smaller, more portable notebook. I was going to purchase a sager 3790 in december, but everyone on the forum informed me of the new sonoma chip coming out and how the prices will decrease for the older chipsets.

So I waited until Jan 19th, but ended up falling in love with the acer travelmate 8100 (still am in love with it ). I was set on buying it, but then decided the $100's more wasn't worth the performance increase so then was the time where I wavered between the 3790, I8600 (only because of dell coupons & price decrease), and the cl56. The I8600 was soon out of the picture as I saw I could get a better notebook for the same price or less. Then came the decision of the century .

I would spend everyday searching the forums for information to finally make my final decision. I ended up choosing the sager because of course it had the much better screen and it was widescreen. Like I stated Earlier, I then realized that the sager hadn't been affected by the price drop yet, so it was still more expensive, unlike the mwave cl56, and would be paying hundreds more for really just a better screen. I then cancelled the order on my sager and ordered the cl56, saving hundreds. Of course I did have to give up the widescreen and screen quality, but in the end I am happy because I got a very good notebook for alot less: $100's less than the 3790 and about $1000 less than the 8100. Plus it's more portable, has a fairly sleek design, and doesn't have a giant tumor sticking out of the back of it ::cough:: 3790 12-cell ::cough::

My 2 cents (maybe to help Neuron's decision)

DVI output would be nice, that is certainly true. But looking at what else I could buy for $1000... I'm at about 90% confidence level of buying the CL56 as well

SeventhSense, I'm getting more and more convinced. I'd just like to hear that yours arrived safely and that everything works before definitely taking the plunge, so to speak.
Yeah, I write code myself, and I know for a fact that CL56 will be perfect for what I do - I currently have an Inspiron 8200 which is an older and thicker CL56 ;-) - same screen, same layout. I usually have Eclipse, XEmacs and few rxvt windows open (install cygwin with X packages - rxvt windows are much tidier than CMD ones) and I rarely feel the need for a second monitor.

Yeah I really haven't heard of anyone buying a cl56 from mwave, but for that price I had to take a chance and buy it. No worries, as soon as I get it I will toy with it and see that everything is in order, and especially make sure that they put in pc3200 and not pc2100.
You guys might have to wait a while because I chose 5-6 day shipping.

I can wait a week And yes, I will make absolutely certain that they're putting in PC3200 (or 2700) memory, anod not pc2100. Did they say what kind of memory they're putting in it? I don't see how they're not taking a loss giving you 1GB of RAM for $100. Same thing with their 80GB HD, actually. I tried pricing these things on NewEgg and found that the CDRW, CPU, Memory and HD came to about $650

what shipping did you order and when can we expect the first pictures?
In a week I'm going to be kicking myself because they'll bump the price up by $200 and it will still be a better deal than anything else. Meh I say, and once more meh.

I choose 2-day shipping, because it was like $5 more than standard ground.

On the memory thing - I checked with sales and tech support, and they assured me that memory they use is PC3200 :

Dear: Customer,

Thank you for contacting MWave tech support. It looks like they just changed it. I stand corrected. It's pc3200. Thank you.

I went with overnight, simply because I'm an instant gratification kind of guy and each upgraded shipping method was only $5 more than the previous one. It was only $40 for the shipping, so I still saved around $900 over the Travelmate 8100 that I was eyeing.

I'll post pictures as soon as it gets here.
So they charge $93 for a 512MB DIMM of RAM, but they'll give you two installed in your notebook for $100? I realize that it's technically an upgrade from the $128 that's the default, but that hardly costs anything. I'm confused... But hey, I won't complain about them giving me a good deal.

That memory SKU comes back as this if you search on it by itself -- looks like we're golden:
BA20137 MULTIWAVE 512MB PC3200 200-PIN NOTEBOOK SO-DIMM

I'm so proud neuron! lol And it looks like you'll be getting it before me!
Yeah the ram does show up as 3200, but I want to make sure that they actually put it in the computer because like dbhertz said it seems like they are actually loosing money. Well all we can do is wait and see!
