review of creative zen micro

Thread Starter
i got my creative zen micro player a few days ago, and decided to post a review of it since it seems like not many people have it yet...

i'll mainly be comparing it to the ipod mini since that's its main competition and i've had a fair amount of time using the ipod mini.

SOUND
the creative has very good sound quality. i previously had a sony cd player and this blows the doors off it. i can hear many details i never heard before. the ipod mini also had pretty good sound but nothing like this IMO. this is the nicest sounding player i've heard so far. the headphones are very comfortable and sound AWESOME. now, i'm not an audiophile by any means, so it may not sound as nice for people like gsferrari as it did for me

INTERFACE
the interface is pretty good. it's all touch, there's no click buttons to be found. there's a vertical scroll pad you can use to scroll through the menus. other controls are a play/pause button, a button to go back, a menu button, and the forward/backward track buttons that can also be used to fastforward or rewind a song. compared to the ipod, imo the ipod has a simpler interface. however, the creative's is still very simple to figure out; after 5-10 minutes of fiddling with it you should easily figure it out.

SOFTWARE
the software that comes with it is probably the worst part of the package. it took me a while to figure out how to transfer music to it, and once i did, i realized that all of the music i had already ripped and encoded in anticipation wouldn't work with the software (or at least i haven't figured out how). once you get the hang of it, it's fairly simple, but not simple like itunes is, which is one of the most intuitive program i've ever used.

OTHER STUFF
i have to mention the size. when i first pulled it out of the box i thought that it was a dummy model. absolutely TINY. i don't have an ipod mini to compare to, but it's about the same width, shorter, but a bit thicker. also very light. another very nice feature is the removable battery. with ipods you have to send it in to apple or an aftermarket company to get the battery replaced. speaking of which, i haven't personally tested it, but creative says that it will get about 12 hours on one charge, which IMO is very good. it also comes with an fm radio. a nice feature, if not very well executed. it can be a bit clumsy to use, and doesn't get very good reception with some stations. still a plus in my book. also comes with a voice recorder which i have no use for, so i haven't tested it. a nice touch is that it syncs your contacts and appointments with outlook if you tell it too. no games like the ipod has, however.

VALUE
i think that this is one of the best values in the mp3 player market right now. it has the most features out of any player i've seen in its class, 5gb hd (compared to 4gb ipod mini), and i got it for only $235 from amazon.com. if you need more storage you can get the zen touch for about $10-20 more.

overall, it's highly recomended, and i would take it over an ipod mini in a second (and i am an apply lover). if you are into fashion, the earbuds look a lot like an ipod's from afar.

if you have any other questions just ask

isn't there a way to just attach pics? i've seen many ppl do it

No, you haven't seen people do it. They link to existing pics hosted elsewhere, just as Wu-Tang suggested you do.

thanks you for the pics! When i looked at the zen micro on magazines and stuff, it looks really ugly but when you look at it in the face or through real pictures it looks absolutely different! My point is that is looks better than I thought!

i personally think it looks awesome. the blue lights on a black backround look really sweet, and make other people ask what it is. no one's ever heard of creative, all they know is ipod

it looks like something out of a 70's sci fi movie to me, which could be good or bad depending on your taste i suppose =)

i got mines today! It feels light as a feather to my suprise! I'm not kidding, this thing is LIGHT! Lighter than an Ipod I believe (to me at least).

Have you figured out what's up?
Is it required to use the software to transfer files?
What kind of battery life are you getting? What's your average bit rate for the mp3's?

thanks

Good review.

There is an article in CNN Money.com that looks at Creative and Apple as they are the biggest players in the MP3 player market.

http://money.cnn.com/2005/01/20/tech...nica/index.htm

I was able to look at the Zen micro up close and it was tiny.

Unfortunately, I just came back from picking up a 20GB Ipod. These things seem to be sold out everywhere. Most places I looked at only had the expensive color models.

The "U2 Edition" black iPod? Thats because that thing is ugly as hell.

The black case I don't mind too much. It's the signatures in the back along with the $50.00 premium which is a turn off for me.

I just bought the simple white 20GB.

I just find it funny that every store I have been to is sold out of iPods. Some had a mini or 2, but most of them had just the U2 one, if any.

iPod generation 3, 20 gig, all the way.

before you have to but now the firmware upgrade saves you the hassle

actually, it depends in which format you encode the music in. i did it in the wrong format, so it didn't work. so far, all my music is mostly wav, and i have some wma's. i encode all my music in 256kbps, and it sounds pretty nice. the bass is a little weak (headphone's fault), but the highs sound very nice.

i haven't really had to use it too long, but i easily get 3 hours before one of the "bars" leaves (can't explain it, it's like a battery meter in cell phones).

any other questions just ask.

i too recently bought a zen micro. i chose it over the mini, rio carbon, and several others because of its superior sound quality. Since then i've really been impressed with the interface too, though. I never had a problem with the software because I immediately updated the firmware and have only used the drag and drop function, which was very very simple and quick. Overall, it's awesome and I'm very glad I got it. ill post some pics as well.

this one might give you a little idea of the size. sorry i dont have other comparisons
