Costco has a Medion Notebook for sale, seems like a pretty good deal

12" Widescreen display
1.4ghz Celeron M (Only bad part IMO)
512mb ram
dvd writer
wireless G
3in1 card reader
2 batteries?

all for only $999

here is the link
http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product...rodid=11028847

what do you guys think? has anyone heard of this laptop before? I tried searching for it but this is the only link I found.
Any idea who makes this laptop or how the quality is?

Never heard of the company or brand before. But seems like a good deal.

I'd say it's safe to buy, because it's Costco. The buyers for Costco have a reputation for finding very reliable, high-value products. I would love to be a product purhcaser for Costco.

If things go wrong, Costco has a very generous return policy. I think 6 monhts for refund on computer products, lifetime for any other product. Best return policy in retail.

yeah, you are right..says right at the bottom of the page

Costco Wholesale's return policy for all desktop and notebook computers is six months from date of purchase. After the six-month return window, all services and technical support will be subject to the remaining manufacturer's warranty, where applicable.

that is pretty awesome..thanks for your input..it definitely looks like a nice deal..i wish they had like higher resolution pictures..and more of them!

Medion is not a very good company from what i know. and for $999, you're better of getting the Ibuypower Slim-Series (the 12" uniwill)

I just looked at their site..their $999 slim series comes with the pentium 4-m 1.6ghz, which is great..but it goes downhill from there..
only 256mb ram
only 40gb hard drive
cdrw only - no dvdrw
no built in wireless
no windows xp

and the medion has two batteries (unsure on battery life though)
I think everything else is the same

I think I will go to costco on monday and see if they have any in the store so I don't have to wait for shipping..if they have any on display I will check it out, otherwise I will just buy it and cancel my order

i have this lappy

u get like 1:45 off 1 battery.
keyboard could b better made, sometimes its unresponsive
the drive is sometimes finicky and doesnt read the cd-r's i made off my old 5670
no probs with the cd-rw's though

its a good deal for browsing/ light applications
I'll keep it till i get one of the sonoma-based lappies
the 6-month return policy helps

damn, only 1:45 off 1 battery? that's kind of dissapointing..but I guess that is why it comes with 2

any idea its customizable? maybe put a pentium-m in there for better battery life, and some more ram? probably no spot for a video card though..

edit: any idea if it can play counter-strike, warcraft 3, or grand theft auto: vice city?

thanks

@sid21177: Where do you get a six-month-return policy?!!! Does that mean you can use the notebook for six months and then return it to get a full refund? That´s friggin`incredible!!! I think I`m gonna have to secede...

costo/samsclub - they have 6 months return policies

the ODM is MSI - S250
it does support dothans according to msi's specs

ram is 256mb on board and 2 dimms to take upto 2 gigs

i gave the shared graphics 128mb and was able to play UT2003 at a decent pace
wouldnt recommend this 4 gaming though

ok, initial impressions are pretty positive.
I really like the display, it seems very nice and sharp compared to some of the Dell screens I have seen. The widescreen 1024x800 or 1280x800 resolution looks great..haven't had a chance to load any movies on it though.
I did get to burn a dvd..I think some people weren't sure if this was + or _ or both..well I burned a dvd-r tonight..full 4.3gb, took 25 minutes at 2x which seemed pretty good..will try + later

overall speed of the laptop is pretty impressive..haven't noticed any slowdowns after loading nero, opera, microsoft office, and a few others.

I loaded counter-strike and it runs perfectly..no slowdown at all

I have encountered two problems so far..the first one being the Sis IDE Controller..everytime I try to install the driver from www.sis.com, I get a blue screen when booting windows and I have to use last known good configuration
Not sure what the problem is

And the other problem would be the wireless card..the driver support for it is bad, very bad..luckily someone from the sager part of this forum has some good ones posted it, however I still think the wireless is a little subpar.

everything else I am happy with..
will try to give more detailed impressions later..I had to write this in a hurry.

one more quicky reply before I go to bed

I forgot to mention I was actually pretty impressed by the small speakers..I think they are under the LCD..they are actually pretty decent for laptop speakers.

also, the design of the laptop seems very sturdy and well-built..the weight is balanced very well so it definitely "feels" like a solid laptop.

Now if I could just get the IDE drivers installed I would be happy..I can live with the wireless..I don't think the range is that great.

it burns +dvds too, i used them

sis is the slowest and worst chipset avalible for video, i don't even know why they are around anymore as they suck so bad its not even funny, this is speaking from expiriance cuz i used to have their SiS M650+962. you couldn't run shit on that video card, solitaire is about the limit of gamming you could do, surfing is *ok* but slow if there is lots of content. other than that, i recommend against this notebook because for $1000 you can get an M6805 emachines notebook
post #16 of 17
Companies use SiS because it's cheap. Sometimes saving $50 is a lot more important to someone than having a faster laptop or faster video.

The M6805 laptop is 7.5lbs. The laptop mentioned in this thread is 4.1lbs. An extra 3lbs is a lot to carry if all you want is a cheap DVD player and DVD burner.

I'm not trying to say that you're wrong... all I'm saying is that there are many different ways to judge a laptop.

yes costco has taken over the spot nordstrom's used to have. i bought a digital camera over 12 months ago at costco. it broke and they gave me a full refund and i didnt even have the box. you have to love costco. ive been a member for 21 years since it was called price club and they have been like that since day one. and even if the six months goes by, if you save all the boxes and receipt i know that my costco in so. cal will take it back up to a year (the computer).
