specs:
2.1 p-m
1 gig ram
dvd +- rw
60gig 7200rpm hd
m9700 256mb gpu
pro 2200g wireless

I've had this notebook for about a week, i orderedut it from ibuypower.com and recieved it smack in the middle of finals. needless to say my grades suffered. a little about the company. i wasn't expecting great service, so no headaches caused. the order took 18 days form first invoice to shipping. but they did ship the laptop in all of three (3) boxes with enough styofoam peanuts to build a snow fort. anyways, when i opened the box, i put the computer on the desk, plugged it in, and turned it on. after launching windows in eight (8) seconds (an act of got compaired to my old desktop), it automatically found and connected to my wireless network and opened windows update to download various drivers/updates. now, let me say a few things about each part.

Size: its 14 by 10.8 inches which differes from ibuypowers specs of 12.1 by 10.8. i subconsiously knew that 12.1 couldn't be true but i just didn't want to find out otherwise. its definitly small enough to manage not like my friends 17in hp notebook. what makes up for the somewhat bigger size (theres some wasted space between the screen & edge of notebook) is its thickness. its less than one inch in the front and slopes up to 1 1/4 in in the back. The first thing people say when they see it (besides what the hell is ibuypower) is "woa thats thin." one thing i should mention is that the laptop has rather large rubber feet on the bottom. these lift the entire computer off the ground.

Case: the case is black plastic with a silver ring around the edges and silver around and in back of the screen. (there is some flex on the back of teh screen) pretty elegant. has a switch for wireless and lights for battery, wireless, and bluetooth. theres mesh around the speakers and ontop of the keyboard. Also on top of the keyboard are the quicklaunch buttion. left one opens the default web browser, middle opens default media player, right one silents the fan. and to the right of that is the power button. if you close the case it will put the notebook into sleep and you have to push the power button again to revive it. if you push and hold the power it will force quit all applications, log out of windows, and shut down.

Keyboard: full size with an extra row of Home, PgUp, etc to the right. keyboard is very springy and has a relativly long travel. i prefer it to the apple powerbooks keyboard. getting used to using the Fn key, alot. the delete key is out of place, moved to the bottom right. the keyboard also has a number pad you can use buy pressing num lock.

Touch pad: very nice clean silver square against the black case. i like the feature of tapping the pad instead of clicking the mouse button. also has shortcuts for dragging files (especially when you run out of room on the pad) and opening the start menu. the scrole bar to the right is way to sensitive but i've been to lazy to change it. on my computer the right mouse button is actually higher up then the left mouse button. you can tell by sight but you can feel it.

Screen: Screen is very bright and very clear, i love it. it can support every resolution from 680x800 all the way up to 1680x1050. no dead pixels. excelent viewing angles.

Speakers: the advertised subwoofer is actually just a slightly larger speaker on the bottom of the notebook (big suprise). the speakers sound better that those on a powerbook. and are also quite a bit louder due to the fact that they are on the screen and are facing towards you. the headphone jack is in the front of the notebook which is kind of a pain when its in your lap.

Heat/fan: i was warned that this notebook would be hot. and its not what i feared. the only place that gets warm is the bottom right corner where the hard drive is. its not like a powerbook that gets to warm to hold comfertably. the fan only comes on when im installing stuff/playing games on my desk or everynow and then when the computer is sitting on my lap. now the fan isn't silent but its not annoyingly loud. lets say if the fan in your house ac/heating pisses you off, maybe try another notebook.

Battery: well ive been on the computer unplugged for about 2hrs and its at 47% so i would support the manufactuers claim of 4hrs. probably between 3 and 3 1/2 with anything besides internet and office. but then again probably longer with wireless turned off or the screen dimmed.

anything i missed? ah, performance. well, valve's steam(ing sht) cuts off halfway though the download of half life 2 but im not having any issues playing cs source or halo. ill get more games installed as time goes on. the rad linker that came with omega drivers says my graphics card is clocked at 104 which i guess is a bit lower than other computers. sometime in the future ill try to oc it a little bit.

one thing i should note is the instant dvd feature doesn't work on my laptop. (you access it buy pressing the quick launch media button when the computers off). i called ibuypower and they probably forgot to make room for it when they installed windows. so ill probably have to send my computer back.

ill get pictures up sometime between now and when hell freezes over but if anyone has questions ill answer them to the best of my ability

(wow, this wasn't so mini)

NICE! Is it the Battalion 101 ML-Series linked here ? Keep us posted. I'm looking for a gamer that's easier to fly with. Thanks.

yes, same thing as the ibuypower batallion 101 ml series, cyberpower Xplorer s4-3000, vicious pc shogun

Totally right, not so mini, but thanks a ton. Finally someone that put a half decent review on. Keep it coming. Besides Captain Als review at his site (w/i/s/e/d/u/d/e/s/./c/o/m w/out slashes) no body has posted a comprehensive review.

I didnt get what you mentioned were the problems with performance. Could you amplify your coments please.

Thanks again for the review. Nice work.

great review!!! i've got a couple of battery related questions, that's really the only thing holding me back from getting this system. could you try testing it out on different screen brightnesses and letting us know how power drains differently on those, also in relation to gaming/word processing/internet browsing/etc...

Thanks, and again, great review, and i hope you enjoy your new toy!!!

oh yeah, with the instant dvd thing.... i thought that was a separate program that runs on a separate partition from your windows drive. did the system not come with disks to install this yourself? did you buy an OS through IBuyPower or did you install it yourself?
I have been contemplating on getting one.... this review sure is helping with my decision.

When you get that instant dvd working... let us know how you did it.

to update again, i must not be able to tell time, i used it again today walking around the house, playing normal CS, downloading stuff from the internet and i got around 3hrs of battery life. so im thinking with screen dimmed wireless off etc you'll probably get around 3 1/2 hours of battery.

urrutiaal: i didn't have any performance issues. i noticed the core speed for the gpu is a little slow but it still plays games fine.

the instant dvd thing is a seperate os. but you have to set up a certain space when you install windows, which ibuypower didn't. the manual isnt very helpful and i cant figure out how to do it.

So you managed to get 3hrs of battery life? Hrmm... I only managed to get a about 2hrs with mine using IE and basic MS Office suite and basic applications.
granted wireless was on the whole time and screen was set 2 clicks below max brightness. Hopefully sometime next week I will get a full review in. I wonder if the quality of the battery differs b/c I had also read a previous review where someone mentioned they only got about 2hrs battery life...

ill keep checking in on battery, these are my estimates. ive never actually gone from 100 to 0%.

i should mention another thing though

Wireless: very good. i can pick up my home network from anywhere in the house and can also get 2 others from neighbors. The powerbook can only see 1 other network and the strength is weak. after i installed the latest intel drivers the signal strength dropped by about half so stick with the drivers on the cd that comes with the computer

I purchased mine Sunday from ViciousPC. I'm stoked! They estimated ship date to be Feb 1 or 2.

From what I've found about InstantOn, it is a Linux partition that boots into a very small linux distribution (I think the partition is 500MB), which then starts the InstantOn software (which is commercial software). It is theoretically possible to resize the Windows partition with Partition Magic and then install the software.

Wireless on powerbooks sucks. I had a friend with a powerbook and compared it to a d-link PC card in a PC, and I could see 7 different wireless networks and connect to 3 hotspots from the 32nd floor of our office, and he couldn't see anything at all.

Wireless also sucks the battery away, as well as can sometimes generate lots of heat. I haven't work with a laptop with a miniPCI wireless, so this may be different, but my 2 PC card wireless adapters get quite warm when in use.

i'll agree with the wireless pcmcia cards... they do suck batteries down quickly. however the mini wireless cards i've used only took about 10 minutes off of total running time. this was on a vx7000 hp notebook.

I got my 259ia3 from ViciousPC two days ago. InstantOn needs about 350MB to install. The notebook does not come with it installed. Should be cake w/ Partition Magic.

BTW: ViciousPC puts a cheesy sticker on the lid of the notebook. I haven't attempted to peel it off yet.

i tried the partition magic software and got everything set up but the demo makes you buy the full version to actually change anything!

on a seperate note, i installed half life 2. im proud to report that i can run it 1200x800 with everything on high. i could go up to 1600x1000 or overclock the gpu a bit, but im perfectly happy. when i play i prop the computer up on some blocks so it doesn't get to hot

When you get the instant DVD play thing to work let us know how it goes.
InstantOn can be installed on a bare hard drive, will make it's own partition of 350mb (bootable CD)

With XP already installed, put in the bootable InstantOn CD - follow directions, it will create a 350mb partition for itself.
Ok thanks.... I was wondering about that. If You should install the instanton CD before installing xp. I guess you don't

Supposedly it will work either way. I would prob try the InstantOn first, then XP, so you can make sure the 2 partitions are in place, rather than waiting for a long XP install, then finding it's harder to install InstantOn later.

It's been giving me hell.

I'm able to successfully install the software (1.4.3) onto the partition, but when I power up the instanton button the screen hangs at:

"MiniLoader version 0.01 Now ready for MESA..."

then the notebook powers off.

I've even wiped out Windows and put the partition at the beginning of the disk...same results. In both cases the partion was 500 MB. When I had windows up, disk manager showed it only using about 240MB. Open to suggestions.

^same error message i get

i bought partition software and followed the manual's instructions to the letter but instant-on dvd still won't installl. it gives me an error saying something about drive id and insuffecent space.

btw, i think the partition is suppossed to be 550mb

here i go off again to ibuypower tech support, kill me now

still waiting...:)

I'm still waiting. Of course it isn't supposed to ship until tomorrow or Wednesday. I can't wait.

If it is configured as I expect, I will have to deal with the InstantOn partition too. If (or When; I'm persistant) I get it working, I will post my experience. The partition probably needs to be within the first 1024 cylinders of the hard drive (old BIOS junk). So it probably works best if the InstantOn partition is first, then Windows.
