Get me going in the right direction... please

I am looking at buying an alienware desktop within the next year . I plan on using my system for mostly gamming secondary to video editing . I am slowly learning the differences between AMD and Pentium base systems. I am just looking for some opinions to steer me in the right direction on what processor/ video card to go with. I am saving for this system and want it to be a purchase that will last for a few years and keep up with the games coming out down the road. Any advice you have to offer will be more than appreciated.

Welcome. I almost purchased an Intel Xeon-based ALX SLI rig until they released the AMD FX-55 based system. From what I have read and gleaned from these boards, the AMD FX-55 is the BEST cpu if gaming is your main goal. For video editing, the Intel CPUs (the highest) might be better. Either way you can't lose. And they will cost pretty much the same for the highest end of either vendor. For video, either ATI x800 XT or Geforce 6800 Ultra will be a great choice. Each has strengths and weaknesses, but it is really a wash. So, to summarize: Any combination of the top cpu and video card will do what you need.

The AMD processors have become very powerful at gaming. I've only had Intel chips in my rigs, but if cost weren;t an issue I'd go SLI with the FX-55.

I'm running P4 3.4 with a GF Ultra and it awesome at gaming but I know the SLI/FX-55 would beat it hands down.

SLI with an AMD 2400+ will win any gaming benchmark, its TWO huge video cards. Go INTEL XEON with SLI...its the best of both worlds.

Is this a new retro CPU? How about 4000+ instead?

How much money are you looking to spend?
Well god knows AMD has every number covered..my point being that SLI connected to any peice of garbage processor will perform...its 2 600 dollar graphics cards put together. I say go Intel XEON...even duals...

I would not get the Corsair XMS unless you plan to OC the memory or the AlienRespawn kit. Buy Drive Image 7.0 it works much better than AlienRespawnr.
