winxp64 can not be installed on Z80K

I did try the winxp 64 1289/rc1 and 1433/rc2,when boot from CD, they both displayed "not support local APIC" ,disappointed....the mb is nforce3 150,and the chipset driver for xp64 do exist, why ?any idea?
I update the bios with A2K 0207a (Z80K and A2K are the same thing,i believe)
but not working yet.

need help!!! thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
is that 6x USB? or am i crazy? cuz that would be crazy for a laptop, its either me or the lappy
post #23 of 228
pr50wner, the Z8K/A2K has 5 USB ports and 1 IEEE-1394 (4-pin).

Lonekey, thanks for reporting on the 0207A BIOS. I hadn't gotten around to testing it with XP-64.

I assembled mine with a 62 W 3400+, and it barely gets warm, even when playing games. The fan gets a bit loud though.

I just purchased a Z80K barebones. After scrummaging around for parts, I managed to put together these specs:

AMD mobile 64 (62w) 3000 (eBay for $110 US)
1024 Corsair pc3200 ram (Tigerdirect for $270 CAD incl. shipping/taxes)
Samsung 5400 rpm 8mb cache (local for $100 CAD incl. shipping/taxes)
Z80K (local for $1160 CAD incl. shipping/taxes)
Total cost: $1680 CAD
EDIT: I've changed the configuration slightly. Replace the AMD 3000 with a new 3400 ($305 CAD). Change total to $1900 for taxes and shipping of new cpu.

I installed the hard drive, but am waiting on the cpu and ram. I plan to run W2000Pro and eventually either Linux 64 or XP 64. Hopefully Asus updates bios when drivers available.

Really what drew me to this product is the amazing price. I've been looking for a laptop to upgrade my IBM Thinkpad 380D (amazingly well built p150 machine and still quite useful for surfing the net, notetaking, etc.) for about 8 months. I had decided on the eMachines 6805, expecting to pay about $1200-1400 for a reconditioned. But for the price of ram upgrade, I get this machine instead. I can only thank Asus for being aggressive in wanting a piece of the laptop marketshare.

As we (will) have the exact same system but for the ram difference, I will post benchmarks in comparison to Lonekey, so we can see if the faster ram makes a difference. The spec sheet supports only pc2700.

According to the POST, my PC3200 memory is running at full speed. I'm downloading all the usual benchmarks and hope to report soon.
Congratulation!!what do you mean the full speed? DDR 400?
Yep. DDR 400 on 2x512 sticks
(my first post )
I just placed an order with a guy who's hooking me up w/
this laptop for $1100 this morning, and we're going to pick
it up tonight. I'm so stoked... This laptop is everything I've
been looking for, and Im only sacrificing the widescreen
which isn't important.

I was looking for:
any LCD w/ sxga+ or wxga+ and better
Fairly descent graphic card in case I want to play games
an AMD64 chip
a 5400rpm (or better) drive
a descent case (plastic ones can get annoying)

My old machine was a Dell Inspiron 8500 which I sold to a friend
recently since one of the usb ports went out and I broke
the pcmcia slot on accident. I had a wxga+ screen and LOVED
it. I was pretty pissed to find out that no stores have high resolution
screens unless you plan on spending $2000 or more.

My setup will be:
# LCD: 15.1 SXGA+ 1400x1050 display
# CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Mobile
# Memory: DDR333 512M
# HDD: Hitachi 40G 5400RPM
# CDRW/DVD Combo
# *** Wirless G , Subwoofer Included! ***
# 4 In 1 Card Reader And Carry Bag Included!
# VGA: ATI Radeon 9700 128M
# Color: Dark Silver

I checked for similar, and identical setups online, and they would've
run me $1300 or $1400+. The guy who's selling me the laptop
is only marking it up like $50 from what he's payin.

have you checked to make sure power management is off in the control panel>power options?
leaving it enabled, downclocks the cpu. the background services are a hog. you need to turn some of them off. this site has info on all services running and which you can safely turn off>> http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

**EDIT. if you dont have a enable/disable cpu throttling, just switch from THIS COMPUTER IS A: notebook-- to THIS COMPUTER IS A: desktop.

So, does anyone have the beta of longhorn running on one of these yet, is it even possible?

What is this ASUS enhanced displayer thing? Where can we get it?

it's "GameFace_DR_XP_2K_040809.zip "

http://www.asus.com.tw/support/downl...0K&Type=Latest

and i also found that microsoft WHQL driver for mobile 9700 is great,so i get both of them installed

microsoft WHQL driver for mobile 9700 :09/09 2004 6.14.10.6483 - i got it from the windows update catalog

i just finished a run on 3dmark 2001:9575 (everything set default,no overclock)
Lonekey, I'll post my 3dmark 2001 results when I assemble my machine. Then, we'll know for sure if the faster ram truly makes a difference. Asus just sent me this message in response to a question I had about the ram:

"We have only approved DDR 333 memory for the system. If possible you may
want to check if the DDR400 memory is running at full speed, but currently
we are not going to guarantee operation if you are worried about this (try
at your own risk)."

Lonekey: Those are awesome pics of the inside of the lappy. Does the removable video card mean it can be upgraded in the future?

After doing some research on AMD's site, I found a desktop version of the Sempron running at 62w. I asked Asus about this too, and they told me they only approve the mobile versions. So, it appears to me this notebook will support the DTR 64 81.5w, the mobile 64 62w, the Sempron 62w and the mobile Sempron 62w. What about the 35w mobile Sempron? Why wouldn't the MB support a lower wattage like this?

hi

Hi.tubpete.I also got a message from ASUS:
As Windows 64 is not yet fully released we only have limited driver support and zero technical support available for this Operating System. I would advise keeping the 32-bit Windows OS on your notebook until we have a complete set of drivers and the Windows 64 bit edition has been fully released.

the 333 ram is running at 2x163=326mhz on my laptop.the bios configurations should had more settings for that.I am looking for a way to expose the hidden settings in CMOS.

the mobile 81.5w should be the destop replacement CPU,I upload the pic for that.
Lonekey, thanks for the information about WOS 64. I'll be checking regularly to see if anyone posts Linux 64 drivers.

I've made the change to my last post to correct the 81.5w cpu name.

I'd like to look at your OPN Guide. I don't have Winrar and can't find a free version. Could you upload as a .zip file? Thanks

(Still waiting on the parts for my machine! No fault of Asus)

Volcompimp, could you please post your benchmarks and settings?

CWKaufmann, I'd like to see what your machine does with the pc3200 for benchmarks.

Thanks
format was changed.
I did try the knoppix64 livecD,it works well
post #39 of 228
Thanks for changing the format. I've looked through the lists to find the cpu I bought off eBay. It isn't there (as it's older than this set). The package is BIX3AP. It's only got 256k L2 cache. I looked at the specs in the AMD support forum. Apparently, this chip isn't 64bit compatible. I've bought the wrong cpu for my purposes it seems. Maybe I'll sell it and buy a newer faster cpu. I'll wait to try it out first, and post benchmarks.

I've been talking to my preferred retailer here. They say they can try to order a specified package, but generally go only by the OPN. For instance, the packages for the Mobile AMD Athlon 64 (DTR) comes in 512k and 1m cache. Thankfully, the AMN BIX5AP/R has no cache variation.

Lonekey, where did you buy your cpu?
ye,that's a wrong one.I got it from canadasys computer inc.Good luck!
